Spadina Station Line 1 - Southbound Platform Escalators Out of Service

Effective starting as early as March 18, 2024

*Subject to weather and unforeseen events, content / timeline accurate at the time of communication.

What we are doing and why

As part of the TTC’s Easier Access Program to make Spadina Station (Line 1) accessible to everyone by the end of 2026, work is underway inside Spadina Station (Line 1) and at street level at Spadina Road and Lowther Avenue.

Construction for Elevator 2 or E2 (Phase 1) continues at the Station’s southbound platform. As part of this work, as early as March 18, the staircase will be out of service (until a new replacement staircase is built), the middle escalator will be permanently out of service, and the remaining escalator will be available for use as stairs (see Figure 1). These changes are needed to create space for the accessible path to E2 and the new replacement staircase. These changes are in addition to the northbound platform escalators that are permanently out of service for preparatory work related to Elevator 1 or E1 (Phase 2). See the diagram below.

At southbound, the staircase is temporarily out of service, and the escalator closest to the staircase is permanently out of service. The remaining escalator is temporarily functioning as stairs. At northbound, Both escalators are permanently out of service.

Three of the four existing escalators at the Line 1 platform will be permanently removed to make the Station accessible with the new elevators. Upon completion of this project, one escalator from the southbound platform will remain operational. See the diagram below.

Post-elevator construction at Spadina Station (Line 1) northbound and southbound

What to expect

  • Starting as early as March 18, on the southbound:
    • the staircase will be temporarily out of service (later in the project, a new replacement staircase will be built next to the new elevator or E2),
    • the escalator closest to the staircase will be permanently out of service, and
    • the remaining escalator will be temporarily available for use as stairs (not moving stairs).
    • There will be new protective hoarding in this area to allow for safe construction.
    • Disruption to subway, streetcar, or bus service at Spadina Station is not expected for this work.
