What we are doing and why

As part of the TTC’s Easier Access Project to make Spadina Station (Line 1) accessible to everyone, work is underway inside Spadina Station (Line 1) and at street level at Spadina Rd and Lowther Ave.

Construction work is underway to install Elevator 2 or E2 (Phase 1) underneath Lowther Ave on the west side of Spadina Rd. Simultaneously, preparatory work, including protective hoarding for safety reasons, is commencing to install Elevator 1 or E1 (Phase 2) at the location of the two existing escalators that connect the northbound Line 1 platform and the pedestrian walkway. Due to this work, these two existing escalators are required to be permanently removed. The staircase with protective hoarding is available for use. These changes are in addition to the southbound platform escalators that are out of service for work related to Elevator 2 or E2 (Phase 1). See the diagram below.

At southbound, the staircase is temporarily out of service, and the escalator closest to the staircase is permanently out of service. The remaining escalator is temporarily functioning as stairs. At northbound, Both escalators are permanently out of service.

Three of the four existing escalators at the Line 1 platform will be permanently removed to make the Station accessible with the new elevators. Upon completion of this project, one escalator from the southbound platform will remain operational. See the diagram below.

Post-elevator construction at Spadina Station (Line 1) northbound and southbound

What to expect

  • Both existing escalators at northbound platform are permanently out of service.
  • Existing staircase (with protecting hoarding) is available for use.
  • There will be new protective hoarding in this area to allow for safe construction.
  • Disruption to the subway, streetcar, or bus services at Spadina Station Lines 1 and 2 is not expected for this work.
