Back to school on the TTC

With the school year beginning next week, the TTC is increasing service and adjusting seasonal routes to make it even easier to take transit.

With the recent introduction of fare capping, customers can tap their PRESTO card, debit, credit, or mobile wallet card, knowing they are getting the best value for their fare.

Monthly fare capping automatically happens for customers paying by PRESTO, credit, debit, or mobile wallet card, when the same method of payment is used for 47 paid trips in a calendar month. All trips after that will be free for the rest of the month.

PRESTO single fares:

  • $2.35 for youth 13-19 with PRESTO card set to the youth fare type
  • $3.30 adult

Post-Secondary Monthly Pass (TTC Post-Secondary Student Photo ID Card required to purchase this pass)

  • $128.15 for post-secondary students

Debit / Credit

  • $3.30 adult

Cash

  • $2.40 for youth 13-19
  • $3.35 adult

Children 12 and under continue to ride the TTC for free.

People paying with PRESTO, debit, credit or mobile wallet cards can also benefit from a two-hour transfer applied to their card when they tap to pay. This transfer allows customers to enter and exit the TTC over two-hours without having to pay again.

Setting a new fare type on a PRESTO card

PRESTO cards are set to deduct an adult fare. If a youth or post-secondary student fare is required, the card settings must be reset at a Shoppers Drug Mart or PRESTO Customer Service Outlet, by showing the cashier a piece of government-issued identification for a youth fare, or a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card for post-secondary students.

Proof-of-Payment

All customers must have valid Proof-of-Payment such as a tapped PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, debit or credit card, mobile wallet, or paper transfer when travelling on the TTC.

Youth ages 16-19 must also carry valid photo ID when travelling on the TTC and paying a youth fare. Post-Secondary students using a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass must have a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card with them when travelling on the system. This card can be purchased at the TTC Photo ID Centre at Bathurst Station or select on-campus visits throughout September and October.

Courtesy reminders

When travelling on the system, customers are asked to please remove backpacks and place them on their lap if seated, or on the floor between their feet if standing. Customers are also reminded to remove their headphones or reduce the volume when appropriate to hear important announcements. As always, riders should let others exit before boarding, move as far into a vehicle as possible, offer priority seating to those in need, and keep doorways and aisles open.

Safety tips

Drivers: As the streets, sidewalks, and crosswalks get busier for back-to-school, please be extra vigilant while commuting. Please yield the right-of-way to TTC vehicles and slow down to allow buses to re-enter traffic after servicing stops.

Pedestrians: Please don't run alongside or in front of a bus or streetcar. It's always safer to wait for the next vehicle, which will be along soon.

Cyclists: Sometimes streetcar tracks can be slippery. When cycling near streetcar rails, be aware of the track conditions and always cross streetcar tracks at an angle to avoid tires getting caught.

Subway riders: Always stand behind the yellow line on the platform when waiting for a subway train. Never descend to track level for any reason. If you drop something, such as your cell phone, leave it and tell a TTC uniformed employee who will arrange to retrieve it.

Streetcar riders: Be sure to check that traffic has stopped before exiting a streetcar.

Bus/streetcar riders: When on board, always be sure to stand behind the white line at the front of the vehicle and stand clear of the doors.

Customers are encouraged to speak to a TTC employee at any point in their journey if they require assistance. People can also download the SafeTTC app for free from the Google Play or Apple app stores and use it to discreetly report an issue directly to Transit Control.
