Proof-of-Payment and fare inspection

All customers must have valid Proof-of-Payment (POP) when travelling on the TTC.
Your Proof-of-Payment shows that you have paid your fare. You must keep it with you for your full trip and show it when requested.
For fare prices, payment methods and transfer rules, visit Fares and passes.
On this page:
What counts as Proof-of-Payment
- A tapped PRESTO card
- A tapped PRESTO Ticket
- A tapped Interac® Debit or credit card (including mobile wallet)
- A valid paper transfer or Proof-of-Payment (POP) receipt
- A TTC Convention Pass
You must get your POP where you pay your fare at the start of your trip.
How to get Proof-of-Payment
How you get Proof-of-Payment (POP) depends on how you pay.
-
Paying with PRESTO, PRESTO Ticket, and Interac® Debit/credit card (including mobile wallet)
Tap your card, ticket, or mobile wallet when you pay. The same card, ticket, or device you tapped is your POP.
If asked during fare inspection, show the same payment method you used to pay.
-
Paying with cash
At a subway station
- Adults: Buy a PRESTO Ticket from a Fare Vending Machine using cash, then tap it at the fare gate.
- Seniors and youth: Pay at the farebox beside the Customer Service Agent, then collect a paper transfer/POP from the red transfer machine.
On a bus
- Pay cash at the farebox beside the Operator.
- Ask for or take your paper transfer/POP from the Operator.
On a streetcar
- Pay cash at the Fares and Transfers Machine.
- Take your POP receipt from the tray.
Please note: Paper POP/transfers are valid only for a continuous one-way trip with no stopovers. The two-hour transfer does not apply to paper POP/transfers, except PRESTO Tickets.
-
Paying on Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West
There is no onboard fare payment on Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West. You must pay before boarding and keep your POP with you.
- If you tap a PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, or Interac® Debit/credit card (including mobile wallet), that same card, ticket or device is your POP.
- If you pay cash at a Fares and Transfers Machine, take your paper transfer/POP from the tray.

Using a TTC Convention Pass

Inspections may happen:
- In a subway station
- In Line 5 or Line 6 fare-paid zones

Fare evasion and fines
Not paying your fare is illegal and may result in a fine with penalties up to $425 or a criminal charge.
Fare revenue helps the TTC limit fare increases, deliver service, and maintain our system. When you don’t pay your fare, you impact our ability to do this.
Fare evasion includes:
- Entering a subway station through a bus bay without paying.
- Entering through a fare gate without paying, including pushing a gate, jumping over a gate, tailgating, or holding a gate open.
- Boarding a bus, streetcar, train, Wheel-Trans vehicle, or contracted vehicle without paying.
- Using a fare type you do not qualify for, such as child, youth, senior, or post-secondary student fare.
If you have questions about POP, ask a uniformed TTC employee or contact TTC Customer Service at 416-393-3030.
