Proof of payment
All customers must have one of the following valid Proof-of-Payments (POP) when travelling on the TTC:
- A tapped PRESTO card
- A tapped PRESTO Ticket
- A tapped Debit or credit card
- Paper transfer
- TTC Convention Pass
You must get your Proof-of-Payment where you pay your fare at the start of your journey. Your POP proves you have paid your fare, and it may be requested at any time by a Provincial Offences Officer (in uniform or plain clothes), Special Constable, Operator or Customer Service Agent, when travelling on the TTC.

PRESTO, PRESTO Ticket and debit and credit card payments
Your tapped PRESTO card, PRESTO Ticket, debit and credit card is your Proof-of-Payment. During a fare inspection, show the same method of payment to the inspector that you used to pay.
-
Cash
- Subway and LRT station or stop (Seniors, Youth): Deposit your fare at the farebox beside the Customer Service Agent. Proceed to the red transfers machine to collect your POP/transfer.
- Subway and LRT station or stop (Adults): Purchase a PRESTO Ticket from a Fare Vending Machine inside a station using cash. Tap the PRESTO Ticket on the card reader at the fare gate similar to using a PRESTO card, mobile wallet, or debit/credit card.
- LRT (Surface): Pay with cash at the Single Ride Vending Machine and remember to take your POP receipt from the tray at the bottom of the machine. Adults also have the option to use a PRESTO Fare Vending Machine to purchase a PRESTO Ticket that can be tapped on a card reader.
- Bus: Deposit your fare in the farebox beside the Operator at the front of the bus. Remember to take your POP/transfer from the Operator.
- Streetcar: Pay with cash at the Fares and Transfers Machine. Remember to take your POP receipt from the tray at the bottom of the machine.
- NOTE: The two-hour transfer does not apply to customers with paper POP/transfers, this excludes PRESTO Tickets. Customers with paper POP/transfers must be travelling in a continuous one-way direction with no stop overs.
-
Convention Pass
- Subway: Show your TTC Convention Pass or Day Pass to the Customer Service Agent to pass through the fare gates.
- Bus: Show your TTC Convention Pass to the Operator upon boarding.
- Subway/Bus/Streetcar/LRT: Your TTC Convention Pass is Proof-of-Payment. Have your TTC Convention Pass ready to show upon request.
Fare Evasion
Not paying your fare is illegal and could cost you a fine of up to $425.
The fares we collect help us limit fare increases, deliver service and maintain our system. When you don’t pay your fare, you impact our ability to do this.
Fare evasion includes:
- Illegal entry into a subway station through a bus bay
- Entering a fare gate without paying (including pushing a gate, hopping over a gate, walking behind someone - also known as tailgating, or holding a gate open)
- Boarding a bus, streetcar, or Wheel-Trans vehicle, including contracted vehicles without paying.
- Using a fare type that you do not qualify for (child, youth, senior or post-secondary student)
Fare Inspection and Proof-of-Payment
You may be asked by a Fare Inspector in a uniform or plain clothes, to show your Proof-of-Payment during your journey. They will always announce themselves clearly. Please treat them with respect. You may be asked:
- In a subway station
- In LRT fare paid zones
- On a vehicle
- As you exit a vehicle
If you do not have Proof-of-Payment, you may be issued a fine with penalties up to $425 or a criminal charge.
If you have questions about Proof-of-Payment, ask a uniformed TTC employee or call our Customer Service office at 416-393-3030.
LRT Fare payment
TTC fares and fare policy apply on LRT lines (Lines 5 and 6). Unlike TTC streetcars, there is no onboard fare payment. Customers must pay their fare before boarding and get proof-of-payment (POP).
Underground stations and surface stops are equipped with Fare Vending Machines where customers can:
- Purchase PRESTO cards or tickets using cash, debit or credit cards
- Load or reload PRESTO cards or purchase a monthly pass
- Check PRESTO card balance
Customers can tap their PRESTO card, debit or credit card, or use a mobile wallet at the fare gates to receive proof-of-payment.
