Sherbourne Station - ventilation shaft rehabilitation

What we are doing and why

The TTC will be carrying out rehabilitation work on the subway ventilation shaft located on the south side of Bloor Street East, east of Sherbourne Street, near 451 Bloor Street East.

This work is required to maintain and extend the life of essential subway infrastructure and ensure continued safe and reliable service. As early as August 31, crews will mobilize to the site overnight and establish a safe work zone including traffic controls.

Work activities

The project will include rehabilitation of the existing ventilation shaft structure.

Work activities may include:

• Removal and repair of existing concrete and structural elements.
• Installation of new or upgraded components within the shaft.
• Restoration of surface areas following completion of repairs.

Pedestrian impacts, cycling and motorist impacts

• The work zone will require the sidewalk on the south side of Bloor Street East, between Sherbourne Street and 565 Bloor Street East, to be fully closed for the entire duration of construction. To maintain safe pedestrian access through the area, a clearly marked detour route will be put in place, guiding foot traffic to the north side of Bloor Street East.
• The stairs on the south side of Bloor Street East connecting to the Sherbourne Station entrance at Glen Road will also be closed.
• Cyclists will be required to merge with vehicle traffic while passing through the work zone. Signage will direct cyclists to temporarily merge with eastbound traffic for a short distance.
• Vehicle traffic on Bloor Street East will be maintained throughout the work zone.

Equipment

A concrete saw-cutter, hand-held power chipping tools, a generator, scaffolding, a small crane, and concrete truck as required.

Work hours

Work will typically take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Some weekend work may be required to expedite the project.
