Overhead Infrastructure Removal and Reinstatement at the St Clair Avenue West Rail Bridge

Effective September 6, 2026 to mid October 2026

What we are doing and why

From September 6 to mid-October 2026, TTC streetcar service will be suspended and replaced by buses as we accommodate the City’s St. Clair-Old Weston SmartTrack Station project and Metrolinx’s demolition of the St. Clair Avenue West bridge. To support this construction, the TTC will remove the overhead streetcar infrastructure on St. Clair Avenue West between Weston Road and Old Weston Road from Sunday, September 6, 2026, through Friday, September 11, 2026, and will return to reinstall the overhead streetcar infrastructure as early as Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following Metrolinx’s demolition activities. Streetcar service is expected to be restored in mid-October 2026.

Equipment

TTC overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment will be used to carry out this work. While efforts will be made by the crew to keep noise to a minimum, beeping sounds when the trucks are backing up will be audible. Equipment lights may also be noticeable.

Work activities, hours, and timeline

  • TTC work is expected to take place from Sunday, September 6, 2026, through Friday, September 11, 2026, and from Tuesday, September 22, 2026, until mid-October 2026.
  • Overhead infrastructure removal and reinstatement will take place on a 24-hour basis. Crews will aim to conduct noisy activities during the daytime.
  • Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.

Motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian impacts

  • All streetcar overhead-related work will be contained within the streetcar right-of-way (centre lanes) on St. Clair Avenue West between Weston Road and Old Weston Road.
  • Traffic on St. Clair Avenue West will be maintained in the curb lanes.
  • Pedestrian and driveway access will be maintained throughout TTC’s work.
  • A paid duty officer and/or flag persons will be on-site to facilitate traffic movements as required.

Following overhead infrastructure reinstatement, all traffic restrictions will be removed, and the work zone will be cleared.
