University Avenue and Orde Street - Utility Investigation

What we are doing, and why
TTC will be conducting investigation work to locate underground utilities on Orde Street. This work is necessary to support the upgrades to the Orde Substation, including replacing an underground duct bank in 2026, as part of the TTC’s Line 1 Capacity Enhancement project. The Orde Street Substation Duct Bank Replacement project will upgrade the substation capacity to support the subway traction power system, speeding up journey times and improving subway service on Line 1.

What to expect
- Work will be carried out in stages to minimize impact.
- Pedestrian sidewalk and bicycle lane will be redirected onto University Avenue with protective barriers and ramps.
- Partial lane closure southbound on University Avenue.
- A hydro vacuum truck will be used for this work.
- Some noise and vibration are expected.
- The crosswalk at Orde Street and University Avenue will be open with a reduced width.
- One traffic lane will be maintained on Orde Street.
- Flag personnel will assist with traffic flow and truck deliveries.
- Informal parking on the north side of Orde Street will be unavailable during work hours.
- Sidewalk access will be maintained on at least one side of Orde Street.
- The work areas will be restored to their previous condition upon completion.
- Bike rack will be temporarily relocated but still available for use.
Work hours
- Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, July 20-29th.
- Any additional work will be communicated.
