Background:

Dufferin Street is one of the busiest transit corridors in the city, serving approximately 44,700 daily customers with 15 buses per hour in each direction for most of the day. To address existing traffic delays and improve the speed and reliability of TTC buses, a new southbound queue jump lane is being implemented by extending the current southbound right turn lane on Dufferin Street north of Lawrence Avenue West. The project aims to improve the speed and reliability of TTC buses on Dufferin Street, benefiting the 29 Dufferin and 929 Dufferin Express routes. The new queue jump lane will help TTC customers bypass traffic queues from Lawrence Avenue West that spill back to Apex Road.

What we are doing and why?

The City of Toronto and the TTC are working together to improve the speed and reliability of TTC buses on Dufferin Street north of Lawrence Avenue West. This project will create a new southbound queue jump lane and widen the sidewalk to improve accessibility.

Benefits:

  • The queue jump lane will allow TTC buses to bypass traffic queues from Lawrence Avenue West, reducing delays and improving transit service reliability.
  • Widening the sidewalk on the west side of Dufferin Street will improve accessibility for pedestrians.
  • This action will also extend the current southbound lane for southbound right-turning vehicles.

Traffic Impacts:

  • During construction, there will be minor widening required into the City Boulevard (sidewalks and driveways) on the west side of Dufferin Street.
  • Access to properties will be maintained, but these driveways - 3130 (Yorkdale Ford), 3120 (Harveys), and 3080 (Yorkdale Toyota) Dufferin Street - will be temporarily reduced in width.
  • Advanced pre-warning traffic signage will be provided as part of the contract to advise construction.
  • Pavement markings on southbound and northbound lanes will be redone as part of the queue jump lane project.
  • Work will be completed in phases in order to keep traffic lanes open.

Project Schedule:

  • Construction is expected to start as early as mid-April 2024 and last approximately 8 months.
  • Advanced pre-warning traffic signage will be provided to advise drivers of the construction.

Noise, vibration, and dust:

Noise, dust, and vibration associated with construction can be expected with this work. Efforts will be made to keep levels to a minimum.

Work hours:

The majority of the work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and on Saturday after 9 a.m., with work after hours and on Sunday after 9 a.m. if required. As permitted, some overnight work will be required during the course of this project for safety and efficiency.
