College Easier Access Updates

Stage 3 - Overnight Work Reminder - New Steel Decking to be installed over the East Sidewalk
Effective April 22, 2024

Timeline: June 10 2024 to July 2024*

*Pending weather, possible third party labour disruption and unforeseen site conditions, circumstances, and events.

What we are doing and why?

As part of the TTC’s commitment to safety and modernization, College Station (Line 1) will become accessible with new elevators and safer with a secondary entrance/exit. The completion date for the project (including a new concourse) is late 2025 - Stage 3 will be in effect until Spring 2025*. As early as June 10, 2024 - until July 2024, TTC’s contractor will begin to set up a work zone overnight for the elevator shaft and stairs construction on the east side of Yonge Street for stage 3.

Stage 3 Construction (new steel decking to be installed over the east sidewalk):

Traffic Impacts:

  • The eastern traffic lanes of Yonge Street (south of College Street) will be closed to construct the new concourse level and new elevators.
  • One lane of traffic in each direction on Yonge Street (on the west side) will be available.

    Sidewalk Impacts:

  • Decking will be built between 439 Yonge Street and 435 Yonge Street. The decking will be installed to keep the east sidewalk accessible to pedestrians while the contractor accesses the area below to construct the new concourse and new elevators
  • In order to build the decking, the sidewalk (on the east side of Yonge Street in front of 439-435 Yonge Street, near the intersection of Yonge Street and College Street) will be closed overnight for public safety.
    • At 2 a.m., there will be a sidewalk closure (on the east side of Yonge Street in front of 439-435 Yonge Street).
    • The sidewalk will reopen for pedestrian access at 8:00 a.m. each day.
    • The east sidewalk will be closed to carry out this work. The west side of Yonge Street will remain accessible.
    • The overnight work is required for safety and to avoid full closure of access to multiple small businesses. This was the same plan that occurred on the west side of Yonge Street.
    • Access to businesses will be reduced overnight but will remain open.

Deliveries and the removal of waste, recycling, and snow:

  • Where construction activity prevents effective waste or snow management by individuals or businesses, the contractor will provide assistance within the scope of the Contract. This may include:
    • Removal of snow in pedestrian pathways, as needed.
    • Assistance to reposition garbage bins for City removal to a location accessible to your normal disposal provider at 8:30 p.m. on collection dayplease label bins with your address.
    • We encourage you to contact your specialty private waste removal services to arrange your services as needed ahead of construction.
    • We encourage you to contact your delivery services to make the necessary arrangements.
  • Larger waste removal/delivery trucks will not be able to use the east side of Yonge Street during construction.
  • Any inquiries for the construction team, including communication regarding snow and waste management, should be made to me: tyrell.ramsay@ttc.ca.
  •

Noise, vibration and dust:

Noise, dust and vibration associated with construction can be expected with this work. Efforts will be made to keep levels to a minimum.

Work hours:

Majority of the work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and on Saturday after 9 a.m., with work after hours and on Sunday after 9 a.m. if required. As permitted, some overnight work will be required during the course of this project for safety and efficiency.

In the meantime, if you have any questions for the contractor/construction crew, please contact me. I would be pleased to assist you so that these services can be accommodated as best as possible throughout the construction.

Thank you for your patience as we work to make College Station accessible.
