Scarborough Busway opening September 30

The Scarborough Busway is in the final stages of testing before opening for service on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The busway, built along four kilometres of the former Line 3 Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) corridor, is opening ahead of schedule and will reduce travel times between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy stations by approximately seven minutes.

Transforming the former rail corridor into a busway involved significant work. SRT tracks, signals and fencing were removed, and the corridor was converted into a roadway with new sidewalks, streetlights, shelters and seating for customers.

The busway has three stops: Ellesmere, Lawrence East and a new stop at Tara and Moorgate avenues. Once buses reach Ellesmere Road, they will continue to use the existing priority bus lanes to Scarborough Centre Station. For customers using the service, not much will change when the busway opens on September 30. The same Line 3 bus replacement routes they travel on today, will travel along the busway instead of using Midland Avenue and Kennedy Road.

A lot has gone into ensuring the busway is safe and ready for customers to travel on when it opens, including extensive testing and working closely with City agencies.
