TTC monthly fare capping launches September 1

Starting Sept. 1, TTC customers will automatically receive free rides after 47 paid trips in a calendar month through the TTC’s new monthly fare capping program when they tap with the same PRESTO card, debit card, credit card or mobile wallet.

The new program ensures customers receive the best possible fare without purchasing a monthly pass in advance, making transit more affordable and convenient for frequent riders. 

“Fare capping is another step toward making transit more affordable for Torontonians,” said Mayor Olivia Chow. “Offering free rides after 47 taps means the more you ride, the less you pay. I am cutting the cost of taking the TTC to make life more affordable and encourage more people to take public transit. When more people choose transit, it will also help ease congestion on our roads.”

“No one should have to choose between paying upfront for a monthly pass and missing out on potential savings,” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers. “Fare capping ensures customers always get the best value for their transit dollars, while helping make public transit more accessible and equitable for riders across Toronto.”

“We’re committed to making the TTC safer, more reliable and affordable for all our riders,” said TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali. “With fare capping, customers can tap and ride as they normally would, knowing they will automatically receive the maximum fare savings once they reach the monthly cap.”

Customers should ensure they use the same payment method every time they pay their fare. Trip counts are tracked separately by payment method and will reset at the beginning of each month.

With the introduction of fare capping, the Youth, Adult and Senior TTC Monthly Passes, as well as the Youth and Senior 12-Month Passes will be discontinued as of Aug. 31.

Adult customers who subscribe to the TTC 12-Month Pass and post-secondary students who purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass should continue to use these as they guarantee the lowest fare and best value.
