Construction details

From May 12, 2025, and continuing until late August 2025, the City of Toronto and the TTC has been conducting construction at the King Street East and Church Street intersection. This work includes:

  • Replacing the ageing watermain (City of Toronto); and
  • Renewing the streetcar tracks (joint City of Toronto and TTC)

Work phases, timelines and travel impacts

Phase 1 – May 12 to June 2025 - work completed

  • Crews have replaced the watermain that runs along the north side of King Street East, east and west of the Church Street intersection.

Phase 2 – June 2 to mid-August 2025 - in progress

  • Crews will replace the watermain that runs along the south side of the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • City and TTC crews will renew the streetcar tracks at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • Crews will replace the sidewalk and will install tactile plates at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.

After the watermain replacement and streetcar track renewal work is completed, the TTC will test the new tracks to ensure they are safe for streetcar service, which is scheduled to resume on August 31, 2025.

Sidewalk access will be maintained, and if closures are required, temporary pedestrian detours will be established with appropriate detour signage.

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

Work hours

  • TTC crews will need to work around the clock (24/7) during new rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and freshly poured concrete.
  • Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.

Rail delivery/storage and rail installation information

  • Before rail installation starts in early June, the TTC will deliver new rail. The rail will be delivered overnight to ensure efficiency and safety, as there is less traffic during this time.
  • The new rail will be stored at or near the work zone.
  • As work progresses, TTC crews will take new rail from the storage area for installation at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • The TTC will communicate the specific delivery date(s) and rail storage locations ahead of installation work.
