Construction phases and work hours

Construction is expected to take place in several phases from February 20 to November 2024:

  • Phase one: from late-February to August 2024, will include water main replacement on King Street West from Dufferin Street to Shaw Street (in progress).
  • Phase two: from April 22 to April 29, 2024, will include rail welding/storage (in the center two lanes) and water connection work on King Street West from Dufferin Street to Joe Shuster Way. In To complete this work, only a single shared eastbound travel lane will be permitted on this segment of King Street West.
  • Phase three: from May 29 to June 21, 2024, will include streetcar track renewal on King Street West from Mowat Avenue to Fraser Avenue. To complete this work, this segment of King Street West will be closed to through traffic.

Details and timing of subsequent phases will be communicated on this webpage once finalized by the City of Toronto.

Please note that excavation activities and concrete and rail removal will be carried out at various times throughout the day. The majority of excavation work will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Around-the-clock (24/7) work during new rail installation by TTC crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Additional overnight rail work by TTC crews may consist of delivering and moving the new rail into position for installation. Rail delivery, welding and storage details will be communicated to affected businesses and residents ahead of this work commencing.

Travel and parking restrictions

  • To complete the watermain replacement work, the roadway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on King Street West.
  • To safely facilitate streetcar track renewal work, King Street West will be closed to through traffic.
  • Sidewalk access will generally be maintained for pedestrians. Any temporary disruptions to access will be communicated with signage by the contractor.
  • Parking will not be permitted within the work areas.

As details regarding this work are finalized the website will be updated.
