Streetcar track renewal

Dufferin Street and Springhurst Avenue intersection, Springhurst Avenue (Dufferin Street to Fort Rouille Street) Fort Rouille Street, and Dufferin Gate Loop Curves

What we are doing and why

On September 11, 2023, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) began working on the following infrastructure upgrades in the area of Dufferin Street and Springhurst Avenue:

  • Replacement of the water main and City-owned portion of substandard water services on Springhurst Avenue (east of Dufferin Street to Fort Rouille Street) and Fort Rouille Street.
  • Renewal of aging streetcar tracks on Springhurst Avenue from Dufferin Street to Fort Rouille Street and the Dufferin Gate Loop curves.

To date, both the water main replacement and streetcar track renewal work has been completed.

The City’s contractor is currently completing final repaving and pavement marking work. This will be followed by overhead and the streetcar commissioning, which is expected to be completed by late November.

Work hours and timeline

Construction is taking place in two phases, from September to December 2023.

  • Phase one (September 11 to mid-October 2023) included the City’s water main replacement on Springhurst Avenue from Dufferin Street to Fort Rouille. For more information about this work please see the City’s project webpage. This work is now completed.
  • Phase two (mid-October to late December 2023) includes City/TTC streetcar track renewal at the Dufferin Street and Springhurst Avenue intersection and Dufferin Gate Loop curves. This work is nearing completion.

Please note that excavation activity and heavy breaking (concrete and rail) will be carried out at various times throughout the day. The majority of excavation work will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Around-the-clock (24/7) work during new rail installation by TTC crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Additional overnight rail work by TTC crews may consist of moving the new rail into position for installation.

Travel restrictions

During phase two, the intersection at Dufferin Street and Springhurst Avenue will close to traffic there will be a full intersection closure at Springhurst Avenue and Dufferin Street.

Parking restrictions

On-street parking is not permitted within the work zones. The City of Toronto has made alternate parking arrangements with affected residents.
