Track Renewal and Overhead Upgrades

College Street and McCaul Street

Starting Monday, November 17, 2025 for approximately two weeks, additional diversions will be implemented on the 506/306 Carlton streetcar route to accommodate TTC track work at Carlton Street and Parliament Street. Full TTC service details can be found on the service advisory.

Construction details can be found on the construction advisory.

Planned work

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have completed track renewal work at the intersection of College Street and McCaul Street. The intersection reopened to regular traffic on November 7, 2025.

Crews are now focused on overhead infrastructure upgrades, which are currently underway and expected to continue through the end of the year. This work includes pole installations, a key component of the overhead work. 506/306 Carlton streetcar service will resume once all work is complete.

Current work

Overhead Wiring Upgrades

TTC is conducting overhead infrastructure repairs and upgrades to support reliable streetcar service and maintain the transit network. Work is actively underway along:

  • College Street (Spadina Avenue to Bay Street)
  • McCaul Street (College Street to Queen Street West)
  • College & McCaul Intersection

These upgrades include wiring adjustments, hardware replacements, and pole installations. They are essential to ensuring the long-term safety and performance of streetcar operations.

Overhead Pole Installations

As part of the overhead work, TTC crews are installing new poles in the area surrounding the College Street and McCaul Street intersection. Installation is progressing one pole at a time, with crews working within a 3-metre radius of each site. Most activities are scheduled during daytime hours, with some night work planned to support safe and efficient progress.

Installation, Timeline, and Locations

Due to weather-related delays, pole installation is now scheduled to take place from November 11 to November 25. Poles are being installed along the sidewalk in front of:

  • 155 College Street
  • 166, 170, 184, and 200 College Street
  • 256 McCaul Street
  • North sidewalk near the University of Toronto gates (tentatively scheduled for November 19 to coordinate with Hydro work)

Work on additional poles and overhead infrastructure will continue as planned, with completion expected by November 25, pending weather and other unforeseen conditions.

Expected Timelines and Travel Impacts

  • Overhead work: Fall 2025 through end of year
  • Traffic impacts: Partial lane reductions are in effect near active work zones
  • Pedestrian and cycling access: Generally maintained, with brief closures as required

TTC service impacts

  • 506/306 Carlton streetcars are diverting via Spadina Avenue, Dundas Street West, and Bay Street to regular routing.

Regular streetcar service is expected to resume once all work is completed by the end of the year.

Thank you for your patience as we improve Toronto’s transit infrastructure.
