Work details
The City of Toronto and the TTC are undertaking the following infrastructure upgrades at the King Street East and Church Street intersection:
- Watermain replacement being undertaken by the City of Toronto; and
- Streetcar track renewal being undertaken by the City of Toronto and TTC
Work phases, timelines, and travel impacts
Phase 1 - May 12 to June 2025: completed
- Crews have replaced the watermain that runs along the north side of King Street East, east and west of the Church Street intersection.
Phase 2 - June 2 to mid-August 2025: currently in progress
- The King Street East and Church Street intersection is closed to through traffic in all directions
- Sidewalk access will be maintained, and if closures are required, temporary pedestrian detours will be established with appropriate detour signage..
- Crews are finalizing the replacement of the watermain located on the south side of the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
- In early July, City and TTC crews will begin renewing the streetcar tracks at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
- In early August, City crews will replace the sidewalk and will install tactile plates at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
- Once streetcar track renewal work and sidewalk replacement work is completed, TTC crews will test the new tracks to ensure safe service once streetcar resumes.
Work hours and noise
- TTC crews will need to work around the clock (24/7) during the rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and freshly poured concrete.
- Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.
Rail delivery and storage
In early July, TTC crews delivered new streetcar rail panels for installation at the intersection. The new streetcar rail panels are currently being stored on flatbed trailers and parked on each side of the King/Church intersection.
TTC crews will remove the trailers from the site as the new rail is installed at the intersection. This is expected to take place in late July, or early August.
TTC service impacts
503/303 Kingston Rd and 504/304 King streetcars continue to divert around the King Street East and Church Street intersection due to ongoing construction.
304D, 504C and 504D King replacement buses also continue to provide service on most sections of King Street where streetcars are not running.
Learn more about these diversions here.
The TTC anticipates regular service to resume on these routes in early September 2025.
