Track Renewal

King Street East and Church Street

Work details

The City of Toronto and the TTC are undertaking the following infrastructure upgrades at the King Street East and Church Street intersection:

  • Watermain replacement by the City of Toronto; and
  • Streetcar track renewal by the City of Toronto and TTC

Work phases, timelines, and travel impacts

Phase 1: May 12 to June 2025 - this phase of work has been completed

  • Crews have replaced the watermain that runs along the north side of King Street East, east and west of the Church Street intersection.
  • At a minimum, one travel lane will be maintained in each direction on King Street East and Church Street.

Phase 2: June 2 to mid-August 2025 - in progress

  • Crews are finalizing the watermain  that runs along the south side of the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • City and TTC crews will begin renewing the streetcar tracks at the King Street East and Church Street intersection in early July.
  • Crews will then replace the sidewalk and will install tactile plates at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • The King Street East and Church Street intersection will be fully closed to vehicles and cyclists

Sidewalk access will be maintained, and if closures are required, temporary pedestrian detours will be established with appropriate detour signage.

Once streetcar track renewal work is completed, the TTC will test the new tracks to ensure they are safe for streetcar service.

Work hours and noise

  • TTC crews will need to work around the clock (24/7) during new rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and freshly poured concrete.
  • Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.

TTC service impacts

503/303 Kingston Rd. and 504/304 King streetcars are diverting around the King Street East and Church Street intersection construction. Learn more about these diversions, included replacement bus service.

The TTC anticipates regular service to resume on these routes in early September 2025.

Rail delivery, storage and rail installation information

  • Before rail installation starts in early July, the TTC will deliver new rail. The rail will be delivered overnight to ensure efficiency and safety, as there is less traffic during this time.
  • The new rail will be stored at or near the work zone.
  • As work progresses, TTC crews will take new rail from the storage area for installation at the King Street East and Church Street intersection.
  • The TTC will communicate the specific delivery date(s) and rail storage locations ahead of installation work.
