TTC to open Leslie Barns Complex this Saturday in support of United Way

Tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the TTC will open the doors to its Leslie Barns Complex in support of its annual United Way fundraising campaign. Members of the public are invited to visit the TTC’s largest streetcar maintenance and transportation facility and explore what it takes to keep hundreds of streetcars serving Toronto daily.

“Our annual open house is an excellent opportunity for us to connect directly with the communities we serve and give the public a behind the scenes look at our operations, all while raising money for a great cause,” said Mandeep S. Lali, TTC CEO. “At our Open House last year, we had nearly 2,000 people come to our Greenwood Complex subway facility, helping to raise much-needed funds for United Way Greater Toronto. This year, we are proud to showcase the critical work our TTC employees do every day at our Leslie Barns Complex to keep our streetcar network moving.”

The one-day event will allow visitors to see behind the scenes of our daily operations at the David R. Miller Carhouse, where streetcars are maintained, repaired, cleaned and painted.

The David R. Miller Carhouse is a state-of-art, 26,000-square-metre facility with 30 streetcar service bays and provides maintenance for the TTC’s fleet of 264 accessible streetcars. It also stores and dispatches more than 120 streetcars daily. It has one of the largest green roofs in Toronto and an on-site storm water management pond. The facility is also equipped with streetcar operator and maintenance training facilities.

Leslie Barns Complex was officially opened on May 28, 2016, and the carhouse was named for David R. Miller ten years later, in May 2026. David Miller will be holding a meet-and-greet at the open house from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Entry to Saturday’s event is just $5, with children under two years of age admitted free of charge. All proceeds from the event will go to United Way Greater Toronto, supporting vital community initiatives.

There will also be a variety of additional activities including a silent auction, BBQ with funds going to United Way, and a virtual subway simulator. TTC vehicles and work cars will also be on display.

The TTC’s Leslie Barns Complex is located at 1165 Lake Shore Blvd. E. Bus and Wheel-Trans shuttles will run between Donlands Station and the event; there will be no visitor parking available at the facility. For more information, visit ttc.ca.
