TTC carries out complex state-of-good-repair work on Line 2 over the Thanksgiving weekend
TTC crews carried out significant and complex state-of-good-repair and modernization work this past weekend during the suspension of subway service on Line 2 Bloor-Danforth between Kipling and Jane, and St George and Broadview stations.
A key component of the work involved replacing one beam and two structural support bearings on the Prince Edward (Bloor) Viaduct. During the beam replacement, crews also discovered that one of the concrete pads supporting the beam had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. The repairs are complex, requiring crews to work with limited visual access through a small hatch and requiring time for the concrete to cure. The TTC thanks customers for their patience while this additional work was completed and is grateful to staff who worked extended hours to help restore service as quickly as possible.
So far this year, crews have replaced four similar beams, with one more scheduled before the end of the year.
Additional work completed over the weekend included:
- Installing 1,000 feet of communication cable, 3,000 feet of power cable and 3,500 feet of fiber cable between Islington and Royal York stations to support the future installation of the new signaling system on Line 2.
- Replaced 10 electrical cable connections at track level that supply power to subway trains.
- Installed cables near Kipling Station storage track to support CCTV cameras that will monitor trains while they are parked and out of service.
- Replacing 2,000 feet of cable that supplies power to Royal York Station.
- Inspecting subway tracks and related infrastructure to identify and address issues before they require more extensive maintenance.
This work is part of the TTC’s ongoing investment in maintaining and modernizing one of North America’s busiest subway systems. Track renewal projects help provide a smoother ride, reduce infrastructure-related delays, and improve long-term safety and service reliability for customers.
The TTC is committed to keeping customers informed about work and events that impact service, as well as alternate route options. For the most up-to-date information, follow @TTCNotices on X or sign up for eAlerts. Customers can also use Transit app to plan their journey in real-time.
