Critical TTC infrastructure upgrades being accelerated in advance of FIFA World Cup 2026™

As Toronto prepares to welcome the world for FIFA World Cup 2026™, the TTC is ramping up essential subway infrastructure upgrades and removing four reduced speed zones on Line 1 between Sheppard West and St George stations over the next week.

“When I joined the TTC last July, I pledged to improve reliability by reducing the number of speed restrictions we had, and I’m glad to say we’ve made real progress,” said TTC Chief Executive Officer Mandeep S. Lali. “Ten months ago when I joined, we had nearly 30 speed restrictions and today we have six. The work being done between now and June 9 will eliminate four more. That means we’ll have better service for our customers on this part of Line 1, for the future and the World Cup.”

These are the last planned TTC subway closures before the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Work will be completed in multiple locations:

Southbound Yorkdale to Wilson:

  • Concrete slab repair to ensure long-term structural integrity, requiring two full days for concrete to cure.

Northbound Yorkdale to Wilson and Glencairn to Lawrence West:

  • Installation of new rail.

Northbound Dupont to St Clair West:

  • Replacement of track hardware

As a large portion of track is above ground in this area, these closures will also allow for weather-related maintenance.

To facilitate these projects, the TTC will adjust service as follows:

  • Subway service on Line 1 between St George and Sheppard West stations will end early each night at 11:59 p.m. from Mon., June 1 to Thurs., June 4.
  • On Sun., June 7, there will be a full-day closure between St George and Sheppard West stations beginning on Sunday morning at 12:30 a.m. until 6 a.m. Mon., June 8.
  • On Mon., June 8, partial service will resume with service on the section between Wilson and Lawrence West stations limited to a single track until 6 a.m. on Tues., June 9.

To accommodate customers leaving the Luke Combs concert at Rogers Stadium on the night of Friday, June 5, subway service will end at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, reopening at 6 a.m. on Saturday. There is no closure on the evening of Sat., June 6.

“This is essential work on one of the busiest parts of our network, and it will deliver faster, more reliable trips for customers who rely on Line 1 every day,” said TTC Chief Operating Officer Fort Monaco. “Our teams have a clear plan, including single-track service and additional support for customers on Monday, and we are focused on keeping people moving safely and efficiently while these upgrades are underway.”

Supplementary shuttle buses will be operating throughout this work and TTC staff will be available onsite to assist customers and direct them to the most appropriate service. Wheel-Trans will be available for any customer requiring assistance.

Customers travelling to and from Union Station from north of Sheppard West Station during the single-track operation on Mon., June 8, may choose to transfer to GO Transit at Downsview Park Station at no extra cost. Customers are also encouraged to leverage cross routes to access the Yonge side of Line 1 including:

- 84 Sheppard West

- 96 Wilson

- 52 Lawrence West

- Line 5 Eglinton
