TTC invites Toronto to celebration of Line 5 Eglinton
This Saturday, August 29, the TTC will host a celebration of Line 5 Eglinton that will bring together local businesses, entertainers and customers from across the Eglinton corridor.
The event will run tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cedarvale Station and include a marketplace with local vendors and organizations representing diverse communities found along Eglinton. From Mount Dennis, to Little Jamaica to Scarborough – the marketplace will offer a taste of everything Eglinton has to offer. Attendees can also look forward to Line 5 keepsakes and merchandise, including stickers, collectable LRT cutouts and commemorative maps.
TTC employees will also be collecting new, unopened backpacks and school supplies at the event for distribution to Toronto students in need. Those who bring donations for the drive will receive a Line 5 commemorative coin, while supplies last.
The celebration will mark the culmination of service increases and improvements during Line 5’s phased opening, which began on February 8, 2026. Over the past several months, customers have had the opportunity to provide feedback, and the line has undergone enhancements to make the transit experience more seamless.
“Line 5 is slashing travel times across Toronto by almost one hour and connecting communities from Scarborough to Etobicoke, making it faster and easier for thousands of riders to get where they’re going each day as we continue our work to protect Ontario by making historic investments in public transit,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Public transit is key to Ontarians’ quality of life and a part of our plan to build a stronger, more resilient and self-reliant economy. Line 5 will keep commuters moving across Toronto for generations to come.”
“Line 5 is an important addition to our transit network, connecting more communities and supporting the city’s growing transportation needs,” said TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali. “As promised, the TTC has worked diligently with the City and Metrolinx to improve the speed and service on the line. Through a variety of measures like transit signal priority improvements and increased speeds in tunnels, travel times have gotten significantly faster since opening day.”
Since opening, a number of measures have been implemented to improve travel times, including:
- Continued improvement of transit signal priority strategies including green extensions, lagging left turns, improved signal coordination, and phase rotation
- Tunnel speed limits increased from 60 km/h to 80 km/h
- Improved management at end-of-line terminals and optimized schedules
- Reduction of computer-controlled minimum dwell times at stops
- Growing operator familiarity
Evening hours of operation have also been extended from 11 p.m. to 1:20 a.m.
Metrolinx and the TTC are continuously monitoring Line 5’s operations and working to identify opportunities for service improvement.
Line 5 Eglinton is a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line, with a total of 25 stops and stations. It runs between Kennedy Station in the east and Mount Dennis Station in the west, offering connections to Line 1, Line 2, GO Transit, UP Express and 68 bus routes. Before Line 5 opened a comparable bus trip end-to-end could take up to 105 minutes. Now with Line 5 that trip is around 50 minutes.
The TTC serves as the operator for Line 5 Eglinton, bringing more than a century of expertise as North America’s third busiest public transit agency. Under agreements with Metrolinx and the City of Toronto, the TTC is responsible for operating trains, providing security and revenue control, and staffing stations. The line’s infrastructure and vehicles are maintained by Crosslinx Transit Solutions (CTS) under contract to Metrolinx. As operator, the TTC works in close partnership with Metrolinx, the City, and project partners to deliver safe, reliable and efficient service, integrating Line 5 Eglinton into Toronto’s broader transit.
