TTC to open Greenwood Shop this Saturday in support of the United Way
On Sat., Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the TTC will open the doors to its Greenwood Shop in support of its annual United Way fundraising campaign. Members of the public are invited to visit the east-end maintenance facility, where TTC crews repair and overhaul a large portion of the subway fleet.
“Every year, TTC employees generously organize and contribute to the annual TTC United Way campaign,” said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. “I want to thank everyone involved in organizing this event, and I encourage members of the public to come out and get a look behind the scenes of the TTC.”
“Greenwood Shop opened in 1965 and plays a major role in keeping the subway running for millions of customers every day,” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers. “Thank you to the employees and pensioners who have organized this event, and who will be there on Saturday supporting United Way Greater Toronto.”
“I am really excited and looking forward to welcoming the public into Greenwood Shop and showcasing the incredible behind-the-scenes work that keeps our subway system moving,” said TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali. “This is a chance to celebrate the dedication of our employees and give Torontonians a deeper appreciation for the vital role Greenwood and public transit play in keeping our city connected.”
The one-day event will allow visitors to go behind the scenes and participate in guided tours of the TTC’s subway maintenance and infrastructure facilities. Entry to Saturday’s event is just $5, with children under two years of age admitted free of charge. All proceeds from the event will go to United Way Greater Toronto, supporting vital community initiatives.
There will also be a variety of additional activities including a silent auction, BBQ, and a virtual subway simulator. TTC vehicles and work cars will also be on display.
The TTC’s Greenwood Complex is located at 400 Greenwood Ave. Bus and Wheel-Trans shuttles will run between Coxwell Station and the event. For more information, visit ttc.ca.
