TTC service to pause for two minutes of silence on Remembrance Day
On Remembrance Day, Mon., Nov. 11, 2024, at 11 a.m., the TTC will pause all service to observe two minutes in honour and memory of Canada’s fallen.
All subway trains will be held at station platforms. Bus and streetcar operators will stop their vehicles at a regular service stop prior to 11 a.m. and remain there to observe two minutes of silence. Wheel-Trans operators will hold their buses at a safe location.
“As Torontonians, it is important for us to come together on Remembrance Day to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who placed service above self to defend peace and the freedoms we hold dear,” said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. “The TTC plays a crucial role in our Remembrance Day commemoration in the City of Toronto. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all TTC workers and riders for participating in the moment of silence to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
“I am proud that the TTC Honour Guard will be representing TTC employees in the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph at Old City Hall,” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers. “This is a poignant moment for us to remember and honour the more than 600 TTC workers who were enlisted for service in the Second World War. Their names are forever remembered on the TTC’s Honour Rolls, including those who were tragically killed in action.”
On Remembrance Day, all current members of the Canadian Armed Forces in uniform, as well as war and peacekeeping veterans wearing military service medals or ribbons, can ride the TTC free of charge. They are also welcome to bring a companion to share in this moment of remembrance and gratitude.
“This Remembrance Day, I encourage TTC customers to wear a Poppy, contribute to the Toronto Royal Canadian Legion, and take a moment to thank the veterans you encounter during your commute,” said TTC CEO Greg Percy. “It is through these small gestures of gratitude that we can honour and show our appreciation for those who have served our country.”
TTC buses and streetcars will carry a sign on Remembrance Day reading “Lest We Forget” and a special message will run on all platform video screens throughout the subway system.
All service and public address announcements will resume immediately following the moment of silence.
