This weekend, May 11-12, the portion of Line 1 between St Clair West and Union stations will be closed as TTC crews continue installation of the Automatic Train Control (ATC) signalling system.
Shuttle buses will run, stopping outside each station along the route. Dupont and Museum stations will be closed, but all others will remain open for fare sales and access to surface routes. Shuttle loading and offloading procedures will vary from station to station. TTC staff will be on hand to direct customers and answer questions.
Wheel-Trans will be available upon request from any station. Customers can speak with a TTC staff member for more information about service frequency.
Over the weekend, there will be extra service on the 510 Spadina and 512 St Clair routes to provide customers with other travel options to get to and from Union Station. Customers can use the 510 to travel between Spadina and Union stations or the 512 to get to the Yonge side of Line 1.
Portions of the TTC’s signal system date back to the 1950s when the subway first opened. When ATC is fully installed on Line 1, it will allow improved capacity on the line. ATC is currently installed on 40% of Line 1, the portion between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Dupont stations, and, if all goes as planned this weekend, ATC will extend to St Patrick Station at the end of the closure. Customers travelling in the ATC area are already experiencing the increased reliability that comes with the modern signal system.
While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and maintenance upgrades.
