TTC signal work on Line 1 this weekend
This weekend, Sept. 17-18, TTC crews will lay 48,000 ft. of cable for the TTC's new Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system, requiring Line 1 Yonge-University to close between St Clair West and Downsview stations only.
Shuttle buses will run frequently throughout the closure, stopping only at subway stations along the route. However, shuttle buses will not enter Eglinton West Station. Customers at this station must board shuttle buses at the intersection of Bathurst St. and Eglinton Ave. To provide a faster trip, shuttle buses will not service all other local stops between subway stations, and parking will be restricted on Bathurst St. between Ava Rd. and Glencairn Ave. Glencairn Station will be closed.
When installation is complete in 2019, ATC will result in a more modern, reliable signal system and a 25 per cent increase in capacity on Line 1. While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work, like replacing track and keeping switches well-maintained. One weekend of work during a subway closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work.
Wheel-Trans buses will operate upon request from Downsview, Eglinton West and St George stations. Customers can speak with any TTC staff member to request the service.
PRESTO is not yet available on all shuttle buses. Customers should carry tokens, tickets or cash in case the vehicle that arrives is not yet PRESTO-equipped.
Regular service resumes Monday Sept. 19 at 6 a.m. The next scheduled subway closures are:
- Line 1: Bloor-Yonge to Osgoode - Sept. 24-25
- Line 1: Wilson to Downsview - Oct. 8-10
- Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Pape to St George - Oct. 8-10
