TTC signal work on Line 1 this weekend

This weekend, Oct. 15-16, TTC crews will lay 4.5 km of cable for the TTC's new Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system, requiring Line 1 Yonge-University to close between St George and Lawrence West stations.

Regular shuttle buses will run throughout the closure stopping only at subway stations along the route. On Sunday, shuttle buses will operate from Spadina Station to Lawrence West Station from 8 a.m. until noon to accommodate the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon.

Throughout the weekend, shuttle buses will not enter Eglinton West Station. Customers at this station should board shuttle buses at the intersection of Bathurst St. and Eglinton Ave. W.

To provide a faster trip, shuttle buses will not service any local stops between subway stations, and parking will be restricted on portions of Bloor St., Dupont St., Bathurst St. and Spadina Rd. Glencairn Station will be closed. Wheel-Trans buses will operate from Lawrence West and St George stations for customers requiring an accessible connection. Customers can speak with TTC staff at these stations to request the service.

When installation is complete in 2019, ATC will result in a more modern and reliable signal system that will allow for a 25 per cent increase in the number of trains operating on Line 1.

While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work, like replacing track and maintaining switches. One weekend of work during a closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work. Here is a video explanation of why the TTC needs weekends to complete critical work:

Regular subway service resumes Monday at 6 a.m. The next schedules subway closures are:

  • Line 1: Finch to Lawrence - October 22-23
  • Line 1: St George to Lawrence West - October 29-30
  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Pape to St George - November 5-6
