Signal and track work on Line 1 this weekend

This weekend, April 16-17, TTC crews will conduct signal and track work on Line 1 (Yonge-University) between St George and Lawrence West stations, requiring this portion of the subway to close. Shuttle buses will operate frequently throughout the weekend.

Crews will lay up to 40,000 ft. of cable for the TTC's new Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system and install other ATC equipment (beacons, junction boxes, etc). Crews will also use the opportunity to complete other track maintenance and state-of-good-repair work, including trackside heater repair between Eglinton West and St Clair West stations.

When installation is complete in 2019, ATC will result in a more modern, reliable signal system and a 25 per cent increase in capacity on Line 1. While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work, like replacing rail and keeping switches well-maintained. One weekend of work during a subway closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work.

To provide a faster trip for customers, shuttle buses do not service local stops between subway stations. Shuttle buses will not enter St Clair West, Eglinton West or Glencairn stations. Instead, customers must board and exit shuttle buses at the intersections of St. Clair Ave. W. and Bathurst St., Eglinton Ave. W. and Bathurst St., and Glencairn Ave. and Bathurst St.

Wheel-Trans buses will be available for customers who require accessible transit. Customers can speak to any staff member at any station to request the service.

- Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth): Kennedy to Victora Park – April 23-24

- Line 2: Pape to St. George early closing – April 30
