Two men have received jail sentences for two separate assaults on TTC employees.

On May 10, a male entered Kennedy Station and began to act in an aggressive manner toward the station collector. The man pointed his finger at the TTC employee as if it was a gun, and tried to enter the collector booth.  Toronto Police were called, and the suspect was arrested.

On June 6, Thomas Brazil, 30, pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening death.  He was sentenced to 60 days in jail on top of the 28 days in pre-trial custody for a total of 88 days. He was also placed on probation for two years, and is prohibited from using the TTC between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., as well to have no alcohol in his system while on TTC vehicles and property.

On May 27, a male was at the Yorkdale subway station.  The train guard had just closed the train doors when the male approached the train window and shoved the TTC employee in the chest for no apparent reason.  TTC Transit Enforcement Officers and Toronto Police attended, and the suspect was arrested.

On June 4, Norman Phillips, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault, and was sentenced to 14 days in jail, on top of nine days in pre-trial custody for a total of 23 days.  He was also placed on probation for one year.

On average, two TTC employees are assaulted every day, ranging from punching, slapping and spitting, to threats of physical harm or death. The TTC's Court Advocates work with Crown Attorneys and the Courts to secure the stiffest penalties possible for those convicted of assault on TTC employees, and continue to seek limits on the use of public transit in Toronto for those convicted of these crimes.
