TTC appoints Chief Operating Officer

The Toronto Transit Commission today announced that Andy Byford will become the TTC’s first Chief Operating Officer. Byford will join the TTC in November from Sydney, Australia where he was COO of RailCorp. Before joining RailCorp in 2009, he held several positions in the UK, including Operations and Safety Director at South Eastern Trains, as well as General Manager at London Underground.

Byford’s appointment follows an international search conducted to fill the senior operations position at the TTC, formerly the General Manager of Operations. The title change and role is in keeping with organizational structures in large urban transit systems around the world.

In addition to overseeing TTC operations, Byford will act as deputy Chief General Manager.

“I am very excited to be joining the TTC and look forward to being part of the team to drive forward our customer service delivery,” said Byford.

“We are very pleased that Andy will be joining us here in Toronto,” said TTC Chief General Manager, Gary Webster. “His breadth of international experience in both Sydney and the UK will allow us to continue to make gains in safety, customer service and the quality of service we provide to our customers on a daily basis. As we prepare for a challenging year with both our operating and capital budgets, Andy will be a valuable asset in assisting us in meeting our budget targets and expectations for improved service.”
