TTC to address Parliamentary committee on a National Transit Strategy

The Chief General Manager of the Toronto Transit Commission, Gary Webster, will address the Standing Committee of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities of the House of Commons today as it conducts hearings into a proposed National Transit Strategy.

Webster will address the committee at 3:30 p.m. at 151 Sparks Street, La Promenade Bldg, Room 228 in Ottawa and outline the significant challenges facing the TTC, North America’s third largest transit operator.

The TTC moves 1.6 million riders daily, or more than 500 million riders annually – a quarter of all public transit trips taken in Canada each year. As Canada’s largest transit system, the TTC has an annual operating budget of $1.5 billion, and a base capital budget of $1 billion, excluding expansion. The TTC believes a new long-term, sustainable funding relationship with all orders of government is vital to a region like Toronto’s. Ongoing investment in public transit ensures the economy remains strong, and the environment healthy.
