RapidTO: Dufferin Street
Dufferin Street is the fifth busiest surface transit corridor in the TTC network, serving over 40,000 weekday riders on the 29 Dufferin and 929 Dufferin Express routes. Due to traffic congestion, only 55% of buses are on time during the afternoon rush hour, with average speeds of just 14 km/h. These delays reduce the reliability and quality of transit service for thousands of daily riders.
To address these challenges, the City of Toronto and TTC have studied the feasibility of installing priority transit lanes on Dufferin Street between Eglinton Avenue West and Dufferin Gate Loop.
This corridor connects riders to multiple higher-order transit stations, intersecting TTC routes, and major destinations like Exhibition Place, BMO Field, and Dufferin Mall. It is also expected to play a critical role in managing travel demand during FIFA World Cup 2026.
What's Happening Now
In July 2025, City Council approved the installation of priority bus lanes on Dufferin Street between Bloor Street West and King Street West, with implementation targeted for Fall 2025. These red-painted curbside transit lanes will be reserved for TTC vehicles, Wheel-Trans, emergency vehicles, school buses, and cyclists.
Council also directed staff to:
- Conduct further study and public consultation on the remaining section between Bloor Street West and Eglinton Avenue West.
- Monitor and evaluate traffic conditions and community feedback before and after implementation.
