The Dish With One Spoon

In 1700 – 1701 the Haudenosaunee Five Nation Confederacy made a peace treaty with the Anishinaabe and their allies in which it was agreed that all nations would share the previously contested lands and waters lying north and west of Lake Ontario.

In essence, all parties could use the land to hunt, fish, gather and cultivate freely and peacefully.

The Dish With One Spoon was based on the tenets:

Do not take more than you need

Leave something in the Dish for others.

Keep the Dish clean.
