TTC strongly recommends continued mask use as provincial mandate ends

With the provincial government’s public transit mask mandate expiring this Saturday, June 11, the TTC is strongly recommending customers continue to wear masks while on vehicles or in stations.

“While the end of the provincial mask mandate is a sign that we are cautiously and gradually returning to normal, we know that COVID-19 has not disappeared and are still strongly recommending the continued use of masks on the TTC,” said TTC Chair Jaye Robinson. “Wearing a mask is a small measure we all can take to help keep our communities safe.”

“Although no longer mandatory on the TTC as of Saturday, we strongly recommend the continued use of masks,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary. “Safety is paramount to all we do. Throughout the pandemic, we have made decisions based on public health advice, while following all provincial mandates.”

Masks will remain mandatory for customers and employees using Wheel-Trans. This decision was made in consultation with the TTC’s Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT). TTC operators on the conventional system will only be required to wear a mask when securing a mobility device.

The TTC was one of the first transit agencies to make masks mandatory for customers and employees in July 2020. Masking on transit has been mandated by the province since October 2020.

The decision not to introduce a new mandate on the conventional TTC system was made following discussions with public health officials and other transit agencies in the Greater Toronto Area, ensuring consistent rules for transit customers across the region.

Masks are one of the many ways the TTC is keeping customers and employees safe throughout the pandemic. Other measures include increasing vehicle and stations cleaning, upgrading vehicle filtration to the highest standards, installing hand sanitizer dispensers on streetcars and in stations, adding service on the busiest routes to better allow for physical distancing, as well as giving away masks – nearly four million to date. More than 10,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to customers and employees through vaccination clinics hosted on TTC properties.

Over the coming days, customers will begin hearing new announcements, seeing new signs and posters throughout the system, as well as refreshed social media content reflecting the new advice.
