Line 5: Phased Opening of LRT Service

Line 5 Eglinton is 19 kilometres of light rail transit connecting customers along Eglinton Avenue. The west end of the line starts at Mount Dennis Station and operates all the way to Kennedy Station in the east end. 

Beginning February 8, 2026, Line 5 will provide customers with convenient and reliable rapid transit service and a convenient new way to move across Eglinton Avenue.

On Sunday, February 8, rides will be free on Line 5 LRT service only. Customers travelling on and connecting to other routes will need to pay their fare and be prepared to show Proof-of-Payment.

PLEASE NOTE: We will not be hosting a launch event on February 8 but look forward to formally celebrating the opening of Line 5 in the coming months.

Hours of Operation

Line 5 Eglinton Light Rail Transit (LRT) service will launch under phased “soft opening” conditions and will operate until 11 p.m. nightly:

  • Monday to Saturday – 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. 
  • Sundays – 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. 
  • Holidays – 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. 

Line 5 Eglinton Shuttle Bus service will operate nightly from 10 p.m. to 1:20 a.m. replacing Line 5 LRT service. Line 5 Shuttle Bus service will pick up and drop off customers inside of Kennedy, Eglinton, Cedarvale and Mount Dennis bus terminals as they would under normal shuttle bus operations. At all other stations, the Line 5 Shuttle Bus service will serve on-street stops located near Line 5 LRT stations along the Eglinton Avenue corridor.

For overnight service, 334 Eglinton buses will operate along Eglinton Avenue will operate until the start of LRT service.

Line 5 Eglinton service offers convenient connections to…

  • 68 bus routes
  • Line 1 Yonge-University (Line 1) at Cedarvale and Eglinton stations 
  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth (Line 2) at Kennedy Station   
  • GO Transit (Kitchener Line) and UP Express at Mount Dennis Station
  • GO Transit (Stouffville Line) at Kennedy Station

Onboard fare payment is not available

  • Tap your PRESTO, credit or debit card or your mobile wallet before boarding the vehicle. At a surface station, customers can tap their PRESTO card or Ticket, debit or credit card, or mobile wallet on a PRESTO reader on the platform for Proof-of-Payment and the two-hour transfer. If paying cash, customers can deposit coins into the Single Ride Vending Machine on the platform and take a paper transfer as Proof-of-Payment.
  • At an underground station, customers pay the same way they do at a subway station: tap their PRESTO card or Ticket, debit or credit card or mobile wallet on the reader on a fare gate. If paying cash, deposit payment into the fare box and take a paper transfer as Proof-of-Payment. 
  • Customers boarding a Line 5 Shuttle Bus must pay when they board (same as they would on any bus or streetcar) either by tapping their physical or virtual card or depositing cash in the fare box.

  • They feature level boarding platforms, priority seating and clear audio-visual announcements. 
  • The fully accessible Line 5 will improve the quality and reliability of TTC service along this busy corridor, supporting the growth of surrounding neighbourhoods and communities.

Service changes to bus routes connectg to Line 5 Eglinton

In preparation for the opening of Line 5 Eglinton, service changes will be implemented on select routes as part of the approved Line 5 Surface Network Plan.

On February 8, 2026, service changes will be implemented on the following routes to better connect customers to Line 5 stations:

Under Owner: Metrolinx (MX), accountable to the Province of Ontario, responsible for overall oversight. About Line 5 Eglinton:

The TTC serves as the operator for Line 5 Eglinton, bringing more than a century of expertise as North America’s third busiest public transit agency. Under agreements with Metrolinx and the City of Toronto, the TTC is responsible for operating trains, providing security and revenue control, and staffing stations to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. The line’s infrastructure and vehicles are maintained by Crosslinx Transit Solutions (CTS) under contract to Metrolinx. As operator, the TTC works in close partnership with Metrolinx, the City, and project partners to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient service, integrating Line 5 Eglinton into Toronto’s broader transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is Line 5 only opening with partial service?

    The TTC will begin an introductory service period on Line 5 Eglinton with light rail vehicles operating until 11 p.m. until further notice. 

    The final step is to implement full, regularly scheduled service over the next three to six months.

    Line 5 Eglinton has passed all essential safety requirements. The soft, phased opening of the line provides additional time for fine-tuning of scheduled based on real-world operating conditions and an extended overnight maintenance and operator training window during the initial opening period on Line 5 Eglinton. This will also allow staff to become more familiar with the line and monitor it for any issues while in service. 

  • Why is LRT service being replaced with shuttle buses in the late evenings?

    Line 5 LRT service is ending nightly at 11 p.m. to allow for an extended overnight maintenance window and operator training.

  • How frequently will LRT service on Line 5 operate?

    During peak periods Monday to Friday (7 a.m. to 10 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.), light rail vehicles will operate approximately every 4 minutes.

    During off-peak periods Monday to Friday, light rail vehicles will operate every 6 to 10 minutes.

    During Saturdays and Sundays, light rail vehicles will operate approximately every 7 to 8 minutes.

    During holidays, trains will operate every 7 to 13 minutes. 

  • How often will Line 5 Shuttle Bus service operate?

    Line 5 Shuttle Bus service will operate every 10 minutes.

    Line 5 Shuttle Bus service will pick up and drop off customers inside of Kennedy, Eglinton, Cedarvale and Mount Dennis Station bus terminals as they would under normal shuttle bus operations. At all other stations, buses will only serve on-street stops near Line 5 stations.

  • How long will it take from one end of Line 5 to the other? What is the end-to-end trip time?

    A Line 5 Eglinton LRT trip between Mount Dennis and Kennedy stations will take approximately 52 to 54 minutes.

  • Why are you not hosting an opening event for Line 5 as you did for Line 6?

    We are taking a different approach to the opening of Line 5. With LRT service beginning immediately, our priority is ensuring a smooth and reliable start for customers and staff. While we hosted a public celebration for Line 6 due to the nature and timing of that launch, the circumstances surrounding the opening of Line 5 are different, and our focus is on operational readiness.

    That said, we are excited to welcome riders onto the new line and will continue to highlight the benefits of Line 5 through ongoing communications and customer focused activities

  • Will you be giving away and/or selling Line 5 commemorative coins and/or maps? How can I get one?

    We know many customers enjoy collecting TTC memorabilia, and we appreciate the enthusiasm for Line 5. We look forward to celebrating the opening of Line 5 in the coming months.
