King Street West and Dufferin Street
Work details
Starting in early September until mid-October 2025, the City of Toronto and TTC will renew the ageing streetcar tracks at the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection. The City of Toronto will also undertake sidewalk replacement and tactile plate installation at the intersection. Learn more on the City of Toronto's project webpage
Streetcar track renewal at this intersection was originally planned to take place in 2024 as part of the King Street West Watermain and Streetcar Track Renewal project (Dufferin Street to Shaw Street); however, due to supply chain challenges, this work was deferred to 2025.
Work timelines and travel impacts
Work is expected to start in early September and continue into mid-October 2025 for approximately six weeks. During this time, the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection will close to through traffic. Parking will not be permitted within the work zone.
Work hours and noise
TTC crews will need to work around the clock (24/7) during new rail installation to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and freshly poured concrete.
Noise and lights from construction vehicles/machinery should be expected.
TTC service impacts
Starting on September 2, 2025, the following routes will begin diverting around the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection closure:
- 503 Kingston Rd – A 503 Kingston Rd bus replacement will be introduced, operating between King Street West at Joe Shuster Way, and Kingston Road at Victoria Park Avenue.
- 504 King and 508 Lake Shore – 504A King and 508 Lake Shore streetcars will divert via Queen Street West between Shaw Street and Roncesvalles Avenue. 504B King streetcars will be shortened to Bathurst Street.
- 29 Dufferin – 29 Dufferin buses will divert to King Street West at Joe Shuster Way via Queen Street West and Shaw Street.
- 929 Dufferin Express – 929 Dufferin Express buses will be shortened to Queen Street West.
The 402 Parkdale Community bus will continue to provide limited service within the Parkdale, while operating on regular routing, during the King/Dufferin construction.

Wheel-Trans services will remain accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.
Keeping transit moving during construction
The City and TTC are seeking City Council approval to temporarily implement transit priority measures (TPMs) aimed at supporting TTC streetcars and buses while they divert around the King Street West and Dufferin Street construction-related intersection closure from early September to mid-October 2025.
The streetcar/bus diversions are expected to significantly increase transit activity on the diversionary sections of Queen Street West and Shaw Street. The proposed TPMs include new and extended "No Stopping" zones, as well as turning restrictions. These changes are intended to improve service speed and reliability while reducing delays for an estimated 91,000 daily streetcar riders and 42,000 bus riders.
City staff will adjust the parking and traffic signage ahead of the diversions starting on September 2, 2025 and once they come to an end in mid-October 2025.
