King Street West and Dufferin Street
Planned work
Starting as early as late September and continuing until mid-November 2025, the City of Toronto and TTC will renew the aging streetcar tracks at the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection. The City of Toronto will also undertake sidewalk replacement and tactile plate installation at the intersection. Learn more about this work on the City of Toronto's project webpage.
Streetcar track renewal at this intersection was initially planned to take place in mid-2024 as part of the King Street West Watermain and Streetcar Track Renewal project (Dufferin Street to Shaw Street) that year; however, due to supply chain challenges, this work was deferred to 2025.
Planned timing
Work is expected to begin in late September and continue through mid-November 2025, lasting approximately six weeks.
Travel impacts
During this time, the intersection of King Street West and Dufferin Street will be closed to through traffic. Parking will also not be permitted within the fenced work zone.
Work hours and noise
- Excavation and removal of old streetcar tracks will occur at various times throughout the day. Concrete milling and breaking activity will mainly occur between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
- TTC crews will work around the clock (24/7) during the rail installation work phase to preserve the integrity and quality of the newly installed streetcar rail and freshly poured concrete.
- Some overnight work and noise should be expected.
Impacts to streetcar and bus service***
From as early as September 29, 2025, to mid-November 2025, the following streetcar/bus routes will begin diverting around the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection closure:

- 504 King and 508 Lake Shore – 504A King and 508 Lake Shore streetcars will divert via Queen Street West between Shaw Street and Roncesvalles Avenue. 504B King streetcars will be shortened to Bathurst Street.

Wheel-Trans and Community bus service
- The 402 Parkdale Community bus will continue to provide limited service within Parkdale, operating on its regular route, during construction at the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection.
- Wheel-Trans services will remain accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.
Keeping transit moving during construction
In July 2025, City Council approved temporary transit priority measures (TPMs) focused on supporting streetcars and buses once they begin diverting around the King Street West and Dufferin Street intersection construction from late September to mid-November 2025.
The planned streetcar/bus diversions are expected to significantly increase transit vehicle traffic on the diversionary sections of Queen Street West (Roncesvalles to Shaw) and Shaw Street (King to Queen).
The approved TPMs include extending existing "No Stopping" prohibitions, as well as installing turning restrictions at the intersections of King/Shaw and Queen/Shaw. These changes are designed to enhance service speed and reliability, while reducing delays for an estimated 91,000 daily streetcar riders and 42,000 bus riders.
Additionally, to support the 29 Dufferin bus diversion, "No Stopping" prohibitions are either being implemented (or extended) on certain streets in Liberty Village. The changes are intended to facilitate bus turns and end-of-line operations.
City crews will begin updating the parking and traffic signage on September 18, 2025. Once construction is completed in mid-November 2025, City crews will restore parking and remove turn restriction signage.
