As part of the TTC’s commitment to safety and modernization, Donlands Station (Line 2) will be getting new elevators to provide accessibility, and a new Secondary Exit/Entrance to improve customer safety and convenience. To minimize the duration of overall construction, the TTC will build the Donlands Station Easier Access project at the same time as the second exit/entrance project:

 

  • The TTC Board unanimously approved the Local Working Group’s recommended Second Exit/Entrance location at 17/19 Dewhurst Boulevard.
  • New elevators will serve the existing station entrance at Strathmore Boulevard and Donlands Avenue.


Intermittent road closures of Andy Masellis Lane and part of Dewhurst Boulevard - November 29 to December 2, 2021

Beginning next week, as early as Monday, November 29, a portion of Dewhurst Boulevard from Strathmore Boulevard to Andy Masellis Lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily to safely deliver structural steel to the second exit/entrance construction site. 

What to Expect

  • Construction crews will begin delivering and installing the structural steel for the second exit/entrance building.
  • The set-up includes a crane and a trailer on Dewhurst Boulevard.
  • Due to the site constraints, intermittent street closures on Dewhurst Blvd and Andy Masellis Lane are expected from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Flag personnel will assist business deliveries, pedestrians and motorists. The laneway will remain open from Donlands Avenue. Construction deliveries will access the site from Danforth Avenue via Dewhurst Blvd. 
  • Noise and vibration are expected from this work.
  • The contractor monitors vibration and noise and complies with the City of Toronto Noise and Construction Vibration By-Laws.
  • Construction trucks, equipment and site staff will be present in the general area.
  • Other construction work is scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Notification will be provided for overnight or weekend work if required.
  • Crews mobilize on-site at 6:30 a.m. and begin work at 7 a.m. 

Traffic, pedestrian and transit restrictions

  • Andy Masellis Lane will also be closed at Dewhurst Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
  • Andy Masellis Lane will be open from Donlands Avenue; however, access will not be available at Dewhurst Boulevard during the structural steel work activities. 
  • There will be intermittent detours to the separate west side laneway adjacent to the #14 Dewhurst Boulevard condominium. In addition, at times, motorists will have to exit and enter the laneway at Langford Avenue. 
  • Traffic flag personnel will be at the Donlands Avenue entrance laneway to assist business deliveries, pedestrians and motorists. 
  • The west sidewalk will remain open on Dewhurst Boulevard. 
  • Pedestrians using the laneway will need to exit and enter from Donlands Avenue between 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily.

Strathmore Boulevard closes at Dewhurst Avenue beginning week of March 22

Beginning the week of Monday, March 22, 2021, crews will begin the activities to close Strathmore Boulevard at Dewhurst Avenue for the second exit/entrance construction project. The work areas are in the construction site at 17/19 Dewhurst Avenue and at the intersection of Strathmore Avenue and Dewhurst Boulevard.

Only private residential access for homes within the work zone (1 – 14 Strathmore Boulevard) will be maintained from Dewhurst Boulevard. All other vehicle and pedestrian traffic will have to use Danforth Avenue as alternates for east/west travel.

What to Expect

  • City crews will be on Dewhurst Avenue converting the road to one-way southbound from Fielding Avenue to just north of Danforth Avenue.
  • Construction crews will erect barriers on the west-side of Strathmore Boulevard at Dewhurst Boulevard to close the street as early as Wednesday March 24.
  • Watermain and Toronto Hydro pole relocation work will begin on Strathmore Boulevard once the road is closed off at Dewhurst Boulevard.
  • Caisson installation continues at the construction site at 17/19 Dewhurst Boulevard.
  • Construction trucks, equipment and site staff will be present in the general area.

Parking impacts

  • Parking will be removed on Strathmore Boulevard between Donlands Avenue and Dewhurst Boulevard except for construction vehicles and equipment.
  • The accessible parking stall on the south-side of Strathmore Boulevard near 11 Strathmore Boulevard will be maintained.
  • Additional on-street permit parking will be added to the east side of Dewhurst Boulevard between Fielding Avenue and Strathmore Boulevard once the road is converted to southbound traffic only.

Traffic and pedestrian access

  • Dewhurst Avenue will be converted to one-way southbound from Fielding Avenue to just north of Danforth Avenue.
  • Strathmore Boulevard will be open to local traffic from Donlands Avenue only.
  • Sidewalks will remain open on Dewhurst Boulevard and on Strathmore Boulevard for local use. The neighbourhood is encouraged to use Danforth Avenue as an alternative for east/west travel.
  • Pedestrian access for homes within the work zone only (1-14 Strathmore Boulevard) will be maintained from Dewhurst Boulevard.

Timing

  • Some work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Work is scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Construction begins at Strathmore Boulevard and Dewhurst Boulevard with Caisson installation - starting March 9

Beginning on March 9, 2021, crews will begin installing caissons at the future second exit/entrance location for Donlands Station. The work area is in construction site at 17/19 Dewhurst Avenue.

Caisson Installation

A drill rig will work to install a series of vertical caissons for the permanent second exit/entrance walls. Caissons are formed by drilling and placing a hollow tube into the ground, placing a large steel beam with a crane into the tube, and filling it with concrete. These “piles” of concrete will form the foundation of the future entrance/exit building. However, unlike a foundation for a house – where a hole is dug and then the foundation walls are built –crews drill overlapping caissons to form the foundation wall, then dig the hole. The caisson wall supports the future second exit/entrance building and the neighbouring buildings. Similar work was done successfully for the second exit/entrance buildings and elevators for Chester, Coxwell and Woodbine stations adjacent to neighbouring homes. What to Expect

A drill rig, vacuum truck and crane will be on site for the caisson installation. Caisson installation stabilizes the soil, creates a safe work zone, and is typical on construction sites where dewatering will be done. This photo shows caisson installation next to a neighbouring house at Coxwell Station. Crews will be drilling around the perimeter of the second exit/entrance site and there will be noise and vibration with this work from the drill rig and vacuum truck.

  • Noise and vibration should be expected with this work from the drill rig and vacuum truck. The contractor is monitoring vibration and noise and complying with City of Toronto Noise and Construction Vibration By-Laws
  • New dust mitigation fencing in addition to the existing dust mitigation fencing and filters on neighbouring fences will be placed prior to the work.
  • Some on-street parking will be required for the construction trucks for deliveries to the site
  • Construction trucks, equipment and site staff will be present in the general area

Timing

  • Caisson installation work is scheduled to begin on March 9, 2021, at the former site of 17/19 Dewhurst Boulevard and is expected to continue for approximately eight weeks.
  • Some work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Work is scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Traffic, pedestrian and transit restrictions

Pedestrian walkways will remain open.


Strathmore Boulevard and Donlands Avenue - Rogers utility relocation work - March 15 to 19

Third Party Utility Work

Beginning on March 15, 2021, Rogers has advised they will begin fiber optic relocation work to allow for future construction of the TTC’s second exit/entrance at 17/19 Dewhurst Boulevard. The relocation area will be on the east side the road of Dewhurst Boulevard just north of Strathmore Boulevard.

Timing

  • Roger’s utility relocation work is expected on Dewhurst Boulevard at Strathmore Boulevard from March 15 – 19, 2021.
  • Some work may be rescheduled by the utility company due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Work will take place between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

What to expect

  • Short-term lane closures will be required on Dewhurst Boulevard in order to facilitate the work. Work is expected in the road on the east side of Dewhurst Boulevard north Strathmore Boulevard.
  • Some on-street parking will be required for the construction dump trucks.
  • Construction trucks, equipment and site staff will be present in the general area.
  • Noise and vibration can be expected from jackhammers, the cutting of the roadway asphalt and the use of a hydro-vacuum truck from March 15 – 17, 2021.
  • Rogers has indicated that there will be no impacts to their service for this work.
  • All work will occur in the road and City’s right-of-way.

Traffic, pedestrian and transit restrictions

Flag personnel will assist vehicular and pedestrian movement on Dewhurst Boulevard.


Overnight and weekend work on the subway platform level - January 18 to April 14

Beginning on January 18, 2021, crews will begin working overnight on the platform level of Donlands Station for the major construction of the second exit/entrance building at 17/19 Dewhurst Avenue and the future elevators for Donlands Station. The primary work location is on both platform levels of the station and this work can only be done safely after revenue service has ended.

Timing

  • Overnight removal work is scheduled to start in the station on Monday, January 18, on the platform level until April 14, 2021.
  • Some work may be rescheduled by the contractor due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Work will take place between 2 a.m.-6 a.m. from Monday-Friday with weekend work also expected.

What to expect

  • A vacuum is required for the removal work and will be on the street-level at Donlands Station. Some noise can be expected from this equipment but sound proofing will be installed around the vacuum unit.
  • Noise levels will be monitored in accordance with overnight noise bylaw limits.
  • The primary work area is within the station on the platform level.
  • Construction trucks, equipment and site staff will be present in the general area.

Pedestrian walkways will remain open.


Strathmore Boulevard utility relocation and parking restrictions - update as of December 10, 2020

As early as Monday, December 14, crews on behalf of the TTC will begin work to relocate utilities in preparation for upcoming construction in support of the upcoming Donlands Easier Access project. Work will take place on the north side of Strathmore Boulevard adjacent to the Metamorphosis Daycare and continue on Donlands Avenue. Please see the map below for more information. Residents should also expect to see work beginning at the west end of the street at Dewhurst Boulevard. This work is associated with the Second Exit/Entrance project. Demolition of 17/19 Dewhurst Boulevard is anticipated to begin as early as December 14.

Work Hours

This work will typically take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with evening and weekend work as required and will include: cutting of asphalt/concrete, excavation, watermain relocation, gas line relocation, hydro pole relocation and tree cutting.

Traffic restrictions

Adjacent on-street parking near Metamorphosis Child Care will be blocked off during the utility work.

Pedestrian Impact

The sidewalk on the north side of Strathmore Boulevard adjacent to the daycare will be temporarily closed for a few weeks to accommodate the utility relocation. Access to homes will be maintained.

Parking

During the majority of construction (3-4 years) there will be little to no street parking available on Strathmore Boulevard between Dewhurst Boulevard and Donlands Avenue. City of Toronto Transportation Services typically bags the existing signs and adds no parking signs. Parking will be removed in order to accommodate safe excavation and dewatering tanks that will be located on the south side of Strathmore Boulevard.

The water table in this area is high and placing these dewatering tanks is essential. The tanks assist in the process of separating solid waste from sludge and temporarily lowering groundwater levels for stable work underground. If you already have a street parking permit, you may park on any licenced street within your parking permit area (8A). City Transportation has confirmed there are parking spots available within area 8A. If you have a driveway or laneway access, you will be able to access your driveway/laneway using the available space on Strathmore Boulevard roadway and park your vehicle on your property.

The TTC reached out to the City of Toronto to request their assistance for items under City control in the City right-of-way. This includes the TTC’s request on our neighbours’ behalf to designate new on-street parking spots on Dewhurst Boulevard and a separate request to the Toronto Parking Authority for off-street parking availability in their lots on Langford and Woodycrest avenues.

The City has advised that they do not designate spaces for exclusive use and cannot designate the east side of Dewhurst for permit parking. If you already have a street parking permit, you may park on any licenced street within the permit area.
