Tunnel Boring Machine “Yorkie” Tunnels Under Interchange Way

September 27, 2013

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Yorkie” completed the milestone this week of tunnelling under Interchange Way west of Jane Street. “Yorkie” began tunnelling again on August 15, 2013, from the northern launch shaft at the Highway 407 station site, and is headed toward the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station’s extraction shaft. This extraction shaft is located south of Highway 7 and west of Jane Street.

“Yorkie” has tunnelled 676 of the 935 metres in this drive and has placed approximately 463 of 623 tunnel liners in the tunnel. On September 24, 2013, “Yorkie” built 25 rings and ‘bored’ over 37 metres.  Tunnel boring machines are expected to tunnel or 'bore' on average about 15 metres a day.

“Yorkie” is anticipated to complete this tunnel drive from Highway 407 Station before the end of the year.

You may follow the progress of “Yorkie” and “Torkie” on our website under “Tunnelling Progress” and “Construction Activity Maps”.
