Tunnel Boring Machine “Torkie” Begins Final Tunnelling Drive from Highway 407 Station

September 17, 2013

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Torkie” began tunnelling again on September 13, 2013, from the northern launch shaft at the Highway 407 station site, and is headed toward the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station’s extraction shaft. This extraction shaft is located south of Highway 7 and west of Jane Street.

“Torkie” will tunnel just over one kilometre in this drive and will place approximately 686 tunnel liners in the tunnel.

“Torkie” completed the tunnelling milestone of breaking through the headwall at Steeles Avenue West, north of York University campus, on June 13, 2013.

“Torkie” is anticipated to complete this tunnel drive from Highway 407 Station by the end of the year.
