Tunnelling 100% Complete!

December 3, 2013

On November 8, 2013, tunnel boring machine (TBM) Torkie completed the tenth and final drive for the project. Torkie began tunnelling again on September 13, 2013, from the northern launch shaft at the Highway 407 Station and bored north to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station extraction shaft, located south of Highway 7 and west of Jane Street.

“Torkie” tunnelled 938 metres in this final drive and placed approximately 625 tunnel liners in the tunnel.

The total length of the twin tunnels is 6.4 kilometres and was bored by two pairs of TBMs named Holey and Moley that completed the southern tunnels between Downsview Park Station and Finch West Station, and Yorkie and Torkie, which created the northern tunnels between York University Station and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. The total length of the new extension is 8.6 kilometres. The difference is made up of cut and cover construction. The total number of tunnel liner rings placed was 8,493. All tunnelling is now completed. You can learn more about the history of tunnelling activities on our website under “Tunnelling Progress” and “Construction Activity Maps”.
