R. Michael Warren

The late R. Michael Warren 8 May, 2019

Robert Michael Warren, former TTC Chief General Manager, died on April 29, 2019 at the age of 82. Mr. Warren served as the TTC’s first CGM from 1975 to 1981. During this time ridership increased by 35 million to 392 million in 1981.

Mr. Warren was a visionary public servant whose dedication and forward thinking helped shape the TTC into one of the most visible and vital public service organizations in the Greater Toronto Area.

In addition to directing the work of all TTC branches and departments, he was responsible for forging co-operative and productive relationships with counterparts at all levels of government and regional transit operations. He initiated many important initiatives that strengthened and improved the TTC, including: major organizational renewal, creation of a new cost-sharing formula with funding partners and an aggressive transit marketing program.

Mr. Warren oversaw the opening of the Spadina Subway in 1978 and the Bloor-Danforth extensions to Kipling and Kennedy in 1980. He also helped renew the streetcar fleet with the introduction of the CLRV cars, which are still running today.
