TTC Oral Fluid Testing Kit Information – Gelatin

Recently, some questions have been raised about the inclusion of animal products in the TTC’s random testing process. The TTC uses a collection device called Intercept to collect, preserve and transport oral fluid for its post-incident, reasonable cause and random drug tests.

The Intercept device contains gelatin of bovine (cow or ox) origin on the pad. Gelatin is a substance that is safe for human consumption and is sourced to ensure quality and safety. No other animal products are present in the oral fluid collection device.

Participation in the random testing program is mandatory for all employees holding a designated position (safety sensitive, specified management, or designated executive). If an employee wishes to seek accommodation on the basis that they are unable to have contact with the gelatin used in the testing process, the employee must notify their manager in writing of the need for accommodation. This must be done in advance of being selected for random testing.

Accommodation will be provided in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code. Failing to do so in advance of testing, and not participating in the test, will be deemed a test refusal and will be subject to disciplinary action.
