Get the shot, not the flu

Influenza – also known as “the flu” – is a contagious infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It is caused by influenza A and B viruses. Each year in Canada about five-to-10 per cent of adults and 20-to-30 per cent of children are infected with influenza, usually in the late fall and winter. Symptoms include sudden onset of high fever, chills, sore throat, cough and muscle aches. Other common symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, fatigue and runny nose. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also occur, especially in children.

Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent influenza. Flu vaccine prevents illness, doctor’s visits and hospitalizations. Each year, there is a new vaccine to protect against the flu virus strains that are expected in the coming influenza season. Even if the strains have not changed, getting vaccinated every year is needed to maximize protection. Other steps you can take to prevent influenza infection are: clean your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands; cover your cough and sneeze; stay away from people who are sick; and stay home when you are sick.

Steps to staying healthy

1. Get your flu shot. It’s available through your family doctor, public health, pharmacist and workplace clinics.
2. Wash your hands often. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
3. Avoid touching your eyes and face.
4. Cover your cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or upper sleeve, not your hands. Remember to wash your hands afterwards.
5. If you get the flu, minimize your contact with others to avoid spreading it.
6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. A nutritional and balanced diet will help you stay healthy. Maintaining your fitness and getting enough rest may also decrease your chance of getting ill this season. 
7. Do not share drinking cups and utensils.

2016 TTC Flu Vaccination Clinics

Getting the flu shot every year is one of the most effective ways to prevent catching and spreading the flu virus.  In an effort to reduce the transmission of influenza in the workplace, employees are encouraged to attend a Flu Vaccination Clinic. Flu vaccinations are available at public health clinics, at participating pharmacies or through your family doctor. TTC Clinics will be held throughout November and December; locations, dates and hours are listed below:
