COVID-19 and the TTC
First and foremost, I want to start by saying you are all doing an amazing job working together, thank you; and I want to update you all on what we’re doing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
As you all know the TTC is a critical service and it’s so important, especially now, that we continue working together to keep the city moving and functioning.
Although we would normally see a decrease in service this time of year for March Break, I want to assure you that Kirsten Watson, our Deputy CEO, and Jim Ross, our Chief Operating Officer, are monitoring service levels very closely several times a day. The situation is fluid, but in spite of the challenges, we need to make sure that we’re still able to help everyone in the GTA get where they need to go.
This is an incredibly difficult time for the entire world, our community, and also for all of you, the employees who work tirelessly to make this organization what it is. We can’t let fear, panic or misinformation stop us from playing a very important role at a truly defining moment. Please rest assured that our Safety and Environment Department is updating messages regularly to make sure you have the information you need to keep you safe.
All of the notices we’ve already shared, as well as a list of frequently asked questions and answers, are available in the Notices Section and on the TTC intranet (internal website) for your reference. This is a situation that is constantly evolving and I know that all of you here at the TTC are doing everything you can to stay on top of it.
I’m also asking anyone who has travelled outside of Canada to self-isolate for 14 days in accordance with the direction from Toronto Public Health. If this applies to you, we have a policy in place to support you; your Supervisors and Managers are prepared to answer your questions about how this affects you.
If you have any concerns for your safety, your family’s safety, or your ability to continue performing your regular duties, I urge you to speak with your Supervisor so that we can help you. I’m committed to updating you regularly as more information becomes available. Following the instructions and precautions of health officials, as well as keeping everyone safe, is my number one priority.
This situation requires a fine balance, which is why we are working with Toronto Public Health to make sure we are making the best decisions for our employees and our customers. I will be on the system this morning monitoring the flow of passengers and will update you again tomorrow if anything changes.
Thanks for all you do.
