TTC’s new Five-Year Corporate Plan

Dear Colleagues,

Today, our proposed new Five-Year Plan was published online, prior to its presentation to the Board next Thursday (Jan. 25). You’ll hear much more about it in the coming weeks and months, but I wanted to share it with you as it goes public. After all, communicating – with customers and with each other – is a big part of the Plan.

The Plan was developed over nine months, through a process that included workshops with frontline employees, managers and customers. Building on the recommendations that came out of these workshops, TTC departments developed hundreds of initiatives for potential inclusion, which were then prioritized by cross-functional teams of senior managers.

The result is a strategic, realistic, specific and ambitious plan that resulted directly from employee input. Highlights include a focus on giving priority to transit on surface, with the full support of the City; a website and app that will provide relevant communication to every employee; senior managers joining frontline employees in the field so they can see things from their perspective; and the elimination of layers of unnecessary approvals that slow our managers down.

The foundation of the Plan is The TTC Way, a simple expression of what we can all do to keep the TTC moving forward: Respect one another, Value each other’s time, Tell people what’s happening, Stay safe, Mind your space, and Help others out.

Developed by a group of TTC employees and customers working together, The TTC Way is how we treat others and how we expect to be treated. They are shared commitments with our customers, co-workers, leaders, partners and communities. They even apply to how we hope customers will treat employees and each other when riding the system.

In my letter that introduces the Plan, I say: “To all of our employees: We know that on a good day, it’s easy to feel proud working for the TTC – you’ve got great teammates and you’re working on something that impacts millions of people. On a bad day, it can feel thankless. I can assure you that this plan isn’t just designed to make things better for customers; it’s also designed to make things better for you.”

Thank you for all your commitment and hard work every day. Together, we are making Toronto proud.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Leary
