TTC service improvements can’t happen without dedicated employees

Last Sunday (Feb. 14), the TTC rolled out the latest in a series of improvements designed to increase service at peak and off-peak times, making our bus network more reliable. These improvements follow other changes made to our streetcar and subway service in the last 12 months as part of Toronto City Council’s $95-million investment in TTC service announced last year.

This investment was itself the result of much lobbying on the TTC’s part, to restore service that was cut in 2011/12 and to accommodate ever-rising ridership. It is designed to make our service more reliable, frequent and pleasant, with less crowding and shorter wait times at the busiest periods.

Last year, we increased off-peak service by making greater use of our existing bus fleet at the less busy, off-peak periods of the day. To increase peak service, we needed to buy more buses and we have just taken delivery of 50 new vehicles that will now be used to increase peak service, Monday to Friday, as well as in the off-peak (midday, evenings and weekends).

More improvements will follow later this year.

With ongoing improvements to service, such as all-door-boarding on streetcars with proof of payment, the progressive rollout of PRESTO smartcard and our ongoing focus on improving subway reliability, a lot is happening to improve the TTC.

Key to that is making you feel valued as a customer and for that, we need our frontline staff to be well-led and highly motivated to excel. To that end, we are putting huge effort into changing the underlying culture at the TTC to unlock the inherent pride of our employees.

It was truly uplifting to host our inaugural Employee of the Year dinner earlier this week. The top award went to Line 2 subway operators John Bethune, Neil Preece and Patrick McLaughlin for their work to improve service reliability on the subway.

I am proud of them and the other 14,000 men and women of the TTC who keep Toronto moving, day in and day out.
