Next Generation Vehicles
Next generation subway trains

The TTC’s new, fully accessible subway trains begin entering service in June 2011. The Toronto Rocket, built by Bombardier Transportation Canada Inc., will replace some of the TTC’s oldest trains. Delivery of 70 train sets is scheduled to take place over the next few years.
The new trains are a “six-car-fixed” configuration with open gangways, which will enable customers to move freely from one end of the train to the other. The new vehicles include:
-
Twice as many multi-purpose areas with improved design for the use of wheelchairs/scooters.
-
Closed circuit television cameras.
-
Two-way communications system between customers and the Operator or Guard.
-
Fully automated (visual and audible) stop announcement system.
-
Electronic subway trip maps.
-
Added accessibility features, such as different colours on stanchions, handholds and the floor; textured floor guides will assist seniors and sight-restricted customers.
-
Handholds and stanchions will have an anti-microbial coating for better sanitation.
-
No centre stanchions to restrict the movement of mobility devices.
-
Evacuation ramps at either end of the train.
Next generation streetcars

Toronto’s next generation of streetcars are coming.
The TTC is poised to bring the very best light rail vehicles (LRVs) to the city. The TTC has started the process of acquiring hundreds of new, low-floor LRVs for the existing streetcar network. The first LRV prototype is scheduled to arrive in Toronto in 2012. It’s going to be accessible with no internal steps, larger, air-conditioned and more comfortable. It has four doors for faster and more reliable service.
