Queens Quay Revitalization Project
Streetcars on the 509 Harbourfront route replaced with bus operations between Exhibition Loop, Union Station and King Station until October, 2014
Streetcars on the 509 Harbourfront route have been replaced with curb side bus operations between Exhibition Loop, Union Station and King Station, for work related to the Queens Quay Revitalization Project.
Queens Quay West is closed to eastbound traffic from Lower Spadina Avenue to Bay Street due to the revitalization of Queens Quay West, involving sewer, watermain, utilities and the construction of the streetcar tracks. The road is open for one-way westbound-only traffic. Construction of the new TTC corridor between York Street and just east of Lower Spadina Avenue is underway. Work related to some underground utility chambers has altered the forecasted schedule and the TTC requires time to commission the line for streetcars so buses will now continue to run on the 509 route until October 11, 2014.
Track reconstruction along Queens Quay West has been completed within the limits of this project (Yo-Yo-Ma to just east of York Street). The installation of streetcar overhead infrastructure and trolley wire is now being conducted.

During this time, a bus replacement service continues to operate in place of streetcars during this project. Buses are operating westbound on Queens Quay West to Exhibition Place. Eastbound buses are diverting via Lake Shore Boulevard West and Harbour Street.
Streetcar service is scheduled to return on October 12, 2014. Resumption of streetcar service is subject to completion of the Queens Quay West streetcar right-of-way. For construction details of the Waterfront Toronto’s - Queens Quay Revitalization Project .
Work will typically take place from 7:00 a.m.. to 7:00 p.m. with work after hours as required. However, the TTC rail installation phases of this project will involve periods of late evening and overnight work.

The TTC is proud to partner with Waterfront Toronto on the Revitalization Project of Queens Quay West. The existing streetcar track right-of-way on Queens Quay West between Spadina Avenue and the Harbourfront tunnel was installed in 1990 and has reached the end of its life cycle. While the track installation method in 1990 was the latest technology available, it is no longer used by the TTC. The current method of reconstruction is far more superior in terms of technological advancement, improved durability of the substructure and track assembly system, which increases the life cycle of the rail and the concrete, up to 25 years.
