Update – March 2012

Construction of a new sidewalk exit at the Castle Frank Station has experienced additional unforeseen site condition issues causing further delay to the completion date. This second exit is scheduled to be open for use in Spring 2012.

Some facts about the new sidewalk exit:

  • The exit will be located at the west end of the Castle Frank Station bus platform, exiting onto Bloor Street East.
  • The exit will provide a direct stairway exit connection from the eastbound and westbound subway platforms for the Bloor/Danforth subway line to street level.
  • The exterior design of the exit at street level will complement the existing architectural features of the station.

Details:

A temporary roadway within the bus platform has been constructed to provide uninterrupted bus access into the station during construction. This roadway will be removed and the bus platform area restored at completion of the new exit.
Hoarding has been placed at the west end of the bus platform to secure and separate the work zone. As a result, the length of the passenger bus platform at street level will be shortened for the duration of the project. Similarly, hoarding has been installed at the west end wall of the eastbound and westbound subway platforms to secure a safe work zone where a direct stairway exit connection can be constructed.

An area at street level fronting the new sidewalk exit onto Bloor Street East will be landscaped at the end of construction, weather permitting.

Work Hours:

Work will be largely confined to the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Occasionally, the contractor may need to work later in the day or on weekends.  A period of overnight work will be required to safely remove a portion of the subway tunnel wall at the west end of the eastbound and westbound subway platform shortly after excavation reaches the depth of the tunnel.

Contractor’s Compound/Deliveries:

Office trailers will be located at the west end of the bus platform somewhere within the identified work area.  Deliveries of materials will predominately be scheduled for the daytime hours.

Transit Service:

Subway and bus operations at Castle Frank Station will not be affected by this work.  All access points at Castle Frank Station will remain open during all construction phases.
