TTC track work on Line 1 this weekend between Finch and Lawrence stations
October 20, 2016
This weekend, Oct. 22-23, TTC crews will undertake track work on Line 1 Yonge-University between Finch and Lawrence stations, requiring this portion of the subway to close. Shuttle buses will run frequently, stopping only at subway stations along the route.
Wheel-Trans buses will operate between Finch and Eglinton stations upon request for customers requiring an accessible connection. Customers can speak with TTC staff at any station to request the service.
Customers heading downtown for events around the city this weekend can use the University portion of Line 1, which is operating normally throughout the weekend.
While the TTC does much of its subway maintenance work at the conclusion of service each night, it requires weekend closures to conduct more complex state-of-good-repair work, such as replacing track and maintaining switches. One weekend of work during a closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work. Here is a video explanation of why the TTC needs weekends to complete critical work.
Regular subway service resumes Monday at 6 a.m. The next schedules subway closures are:
- Line 1 Yonge-University: St George to Lawrence West - October 29-30
- Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Pape to St George - November 5-6
- Line 1 Yonge-University: St George to Lawrence West - November 12-13
Also this weekend, on Sunday from 2 - 8 a.m., the TTC, Toronto Police, Fire, and Toronto Paramedic Services will conduct an emergency simulation in the streetcar tunnel between Union Station and Queens Quay/Ferry Docks Station. The exercise, which will simulate emergency evacuation of several streetcars in the tunnel, will involve approximately 350 participants in passenger roles and include use of stage smoke.
During this event, that is not open to media, the 510/317 Spadina streetcar will terminate at Queens Quay loop. The 509 Harbourfront streetcar will be replaced by shuttle buses, providing service on Queens Quay between Queens Quay Loop and King Station via Queens Quay, Bay St., Adelaide St., Yonge St. andWellington St. Regular streetcar service on Queens Quay resumes at 8 a.m. Sunday.
PRESTO is not yet available on all shuttle buses. Customers should carry tokens, tickets or cash in case the vehicle that arrives is not yet PRESTO-equipped.
