Subway signal upgrade work this weekend; new TTC video explains process
March 5, 2014
The Toronto Transit Commission is continuing signal upgrade work on Line 1 (Yonge-University-Spadina) from Bloor to St Andrew stations over three weekends, starting this weekend: March 8-9, followed by the weekends of March 22-23 and April 5-6. Subway trains will terminate at Bloor and St Andrew stations on Line 1.
The TTC will operate 47 shuttle buses on Yonge St. between Rosedale and King stations, and over to St Andrew Station. Union subway station will be closed, with no access from the subway station to the main train station. Customers going to the Air Canada Centre will need to walk from King or St Andrew stations or take the 6 Bay bus.
The signal upgrade work is part of the TTC’s commitment to modernization. The existing signals, relays, wiring and cabling equipment, much of which is approaching 60 years of age, need replacing as their continued failure significantly impacts service. The TTC produced this 7 minute video that explains signal systems , why it is replacing its aging system, and what a modern and reliable signal system will do to improve service once completed.
Over the course of the three weekend closures for this work, the TTC will have Wheel-Trans buses available to accommodate seniors and persons with disabilities who use wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility aids.
Customers can also use the 504 King or 505 Dundas streetcars to get downtown. Both streetcar routes terminate at Broadview and Dundas West stations on Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth).
Regular subway service resumes on Monday morning at 6 a.m. following each closure.
